Post by: MR_PINK on June 25, 2005, 10:50:13 AM
My bike is being shipped down ot LA for the upcoming move and i have to get all the gas out, since ive never done this whats the best method, i won't have time to ride and the tank is half full, should i pull the tank and drain it?  I figured there is an easier way?   :dunno:  TIA

You could probably put the petcock on prime and drain the gas out through the floatbowl screws. There's going to be a little left in the tank though so if it absolutely must be dry you'll probably have to pull the tank off and drain it.

How's it being shipped?  Usually it's no big deal to have fluids in the bike, as long as they're staying where they're supposed to...

It;s being shipped by the military via 18 wheeler, but i called and they said all fluids plus battery out of the bike, im just glad it's not water cooled

It's tuff getting all the gas out. I have stuffed long rags in there, hairdryers, put it up behind a car exhaust, and let it sit out for a long time, and still the damn thing has gas in it. The crap pockets hold most of it and don't want to give it up. It will take some time, so make time for it. Good luck

Yea its got 50 miles since last fill up =/. so im going to put a 100 miles out it and drain the rest through the carbs i guess.  Drop the oil and a put a new filter in and fill it up once it gets down to the beach

i just rode 193 miles on reserve and wasnt empty so you can run it on reserve for abit and not worry, that way you would have as much gas to drain.

Wait a minute, you mean you tried to get rid of the gas with a hairdrier!!  :o  Now there's a disaster in the making.

Um, yeah.  :?   Every hair drier I have dealt with (only 2 or 3 I guess) has had an electric motor with brushes that ... uh .. tend to spark!  :o

Well i went ahead and just pulled the tank off and lines and drained it that way, its still a pita to get all of it out but i figure it's good enough, pulled my oil and put a new filter in.  Now bike will only sit for a week or so without oil in it, so would be best to drop a teaspoon of oil in each cyl before i start it up or just do crank no start till i get oil pressure?

If it's going to be in non-op status for more than two weeks, then I would put the teaspoon of oil in the cylinders, otherwise, less than two weeks is not enough downtime to require that.

Hope you have a good trip, it was good to ride with ya!

San Jose to LA?  You can't ride it down?  It's only about 350 miles...

My bike sat for 10 years with Gas and oil in it !!!

The gas tank was a mess !! And the carbs.. Got that all cleaned and put back on. As far as the oil.. I just drained it.. put a new filter in.. cranked the pistons once by hand to make sure they werent stuck... I probably should have put some oil in the cylinder.. however

I Hit the starter and... Vroom Vroom... :) No problems related to the fuel or oil from sitting 10 years !
