Title: Over-revved the engine today
Post by: The Lazy Destroyer on June 26, 2005, 12:55:51 AM
Went on a cruise on the GS today. Been doing pretty good with it, but today was my first big "Oops" incident. A buddy and I are cruising, turn to a big empty stretch of road, he hauls down on his F4i. I wait a few seconds for him to get a good distance, then I decide to run it up too.

Shifted down into second, run it up to about 10k. Like a dumbass I left my foot on top of the shifter. I make a move to upshift but my shifter catches on my shoe while trying to get under it. Downshifts into FIRST!  :o  :o  :o

Of course revs go way beyond sane levels and bike just about threw me off of it. Valve float drops the revs down a little bit then it lunges back again. Bike does this a couple times, kinda does a real strong forward and backward lunge. I grabbed the clutch as quick as I could, but it had done this for a full second or so since I had to regain composure/stability before even thinking about the clutch. Pull off to the side of the road.

Fortunately, no strange engine noises or anything, but my idle was at 3K instead of my usual 1200-ish. My friends place is about a 1/2 mile down the road so I get over there, no issues, but idle is still high when I pull it in. Engine was a bit warmer than normal. I decide to call it a day.

So, I have to ask. Any potential damage? Only thing I noticed was the higher idle. I'm thinking I may be okay and dodged a bullet, but not sure if there are any major problems that do not have an audible sympton. Any recommendations as to anything I should do tomorrow before riding? I figure maybe I should change the oil and make sure there isnt anything nasty in there. Never worked on a bike motor but have lots of experience in car engines.

As far as what my RPM's were, not sure, cause my tach didnt really seem to like the RPM's either, but whatever 10K in second gear is where I was at in first :nono:

Short term valve float does not cause any real problems. Doing this a lot can risk bending valves.

I've bumped the shifter down by accident before.  A few times, when I hit a pothole, my foot has bumped the shifter from 2nd to neutral.  And once when I was wearing big work boots (didn't fit under the shifter too well), I tried to shift up, but shifted down instead.  I don't wear those boots on the bike anymore!

Times like this, I'm glad I'm still on the GS and not something with monster-stomping engine braking.

Ive missed a few shifts while at wot and have put my bike what seems to be in the 12-14k rpm range, but have not had any problems, this motor is pretty bullit proof

Well I took it for a cruise Sunday and it rode fine, no problems.

I'm wondering if I should change the oil to make sure I didnt mess up any bearing material and whatnot? Or should I not worry about it? Unfortunately I just changed the oil about 200 miles ago...

Thoughts?

How on earth do you get these bikes to wheelie. It's almost impossible cause they are too heavy

:? I did one accidentally...  So...  I don't think it's impossible at all.
