Title: Dropped my frigging bike
Post by: hulap0pr on June 29, 2005, 08:18:44 PM
Stopped off for gas tonight and put the bike on its sidestand. I guess there was a slight slope. I got off and was taking off my helmet when I felt a pain in my leg. Looked over, and there she was, all srawled out.  :(  Is it me, or is the GS sidestand particularly sensitive to an incline?

Anyway, no serious damage (I think my knee will be fine) but I did bend the clutch lever. Is it safe to bend that back, or should I order up a new one?

I tried bending mine back and it broke off. I actually like it better now, it is about an inch shorter and there is no annoying ball on the end.

GS sidestand is too long IMO...

Heh.  On a serious note.. it's probably a good idea to get it replaced.  The annoying ball will be less annoying then the clutch going through your hand the next time you're down.  Unless you're really into that s&m stuff.. :)

When parking downhill (or slope), put the bike in gear and roll it forward til it stops, then put the sidestand down; this way it can't roll forward off the sidestand.

Well, I never put my bike in gear when I parked it (this one or my old Honda) before, but I will from now on. Leason learned.
I did a search through the forums for clutch lever replacement instructions, and came across this picture from Kerry. Had to laugh. Mine now looks EXACTLY like this. In a funny way, I kinda like it. But it's gotta go.

i have to change mine also. any idea of how to do it? do i just remove the one bolt? how about the wire that hooks up to the lever to know when clutch is pulled in? i don't know if it makes any difference but i have an 04

If the clutch lever assembly on the '04 looks like this one (http://www.bbburma.net/MiscFotos/100_1230_ClutchEngagementSwitch.jpg) on my '99, then YES - remove the two screws and let the switch drop out of the way.

If you don't, you will have to break the switch to get the lever off, and then you'll get angry.... :x

A buddy of mine just dumped his 1300 off a lift..
He thought the kick stand was down and he let the lift down..
He gave the bike a push to get it to rest on the kickstand side..

Kick stand wasn't down..

He said there was nothing he could do but watch it go.. No way to catch a 700 pound bike from the high side..
