I'm debating picking up a 1989 FJ1200 from a local for a song, Anyone have an experience with them? It's been repainted, but in good shape, 20k miles, no ABS(unfortunately), Kerker pipes and some carb trouble. Any advice would be great!

dont know about the 1200, but ive ridden the 1100 (spose to be faster then the 1200) and it handles nice, not sluggish handling but VERY VERY HEAVY. parts are getting scarce as the sprint cars use them alot. i wouldnt think twice about getting one. i would however consider the 17 wheel conversion (YZF i think?) as 16" wheels limit tire selection. must admit, 145 mph with more to spare of OLD SCHOOL BRUTE HORSEY SAUCE is always something to feel fact if i had 2.5K right now, i could pickup 2 complete bikes and enough parts to rebuild one engine completely to 0 miles

The '89 FJ1200 has the 17" front rim (it's the first year with them)(16" rear). It still has the cooling problems so inherent to all of the FJ's. It should have an oil-cooler, which helps. The Kerker pipes are why it's having problems, go back to stock. Aftermarket pipes make it run too lean and run hot.

cant say any of the yamaha's ive ever ridden had overheating issues. it must not be jetted correctly. or that heatshield that sits around the carb area was removed letting the engine heat really mess with carbs. once put back on cleared it up. if the price is right, get it. they make very nice comfortable power cruisers
