Title: Cable routing
Post by: gerharddvs on June 30, 2005, 11:49:11 PM
Hi, I've got some problems with the cables on my GS. The clutch cable keeps on getting jammed so that the clutch gets stuck sometimes and when I turn my steering to the far right my bike accelerates. I suspect that the routing of the cables to the handlebars is wrong.

Does anyone have a diagram or maybe an explanation of how to route the cables from the engine to the handlebars. Even a couple of pics from a new standard bike will do.

Thanks

Part of the routing (the obvious part, unfortunately) is shown in the diagram on the Fuel Hose Routing (http://www.bbburma.net/FuelHoseRouting.htm) page.

From there, the normal route goes:over the crossways frame piece because I couldn't get it to make a tight enough turn to go under that piece.  This change didn't seem to affect anything.

Later, when I mounted handlebar risers, I had the same problem that you describe.  To fix it I:outside of (to the left of) the forks
* reattached the cable at the lever[/list:u]This allowed more slack, and the problem disappeared.

If this problem has not always occurred on your bike, it may be sufficient to lubricate the cable.  (Excess friction inside the housing could make the cable stick ... and act "shorter".)

Thanks. How about the throttle cable. Mind is going over the cross bar and out on the right side of the front end of the frame and my clutch is going out on the left when you sit on the bike. Is this right. Or do they have to come out on opposite sides.

Here is what my cable routes look like as of 3:00 this morning:

If the second photo is confusing ( I sure think it is!) just remember that the clutch cable is the one on the outside of the forks.

Don't you mean, "Have you cleaned your windshield LATEly?"?  :)

Either way, the answer is NO.

I'm sure it's just the lack of light on the other side combined with the flash, it looks alot worse than it is.
