I have an 05 GS500F I just purchased 3 1/2 weeks ago and it has 412 miles on it.
Yesterday when I was on the highway I noticed the bike was sputtering and jerking a little, so I flipped on the reserve. It was ok for about half a mile, but I noticed that it was idling poorly about 1000rpms as I came to a stop, and threatening to die. I had to hold the throttle to keep it alive. I filled up at the nearest gas station. But it was hard to start and when it did it still threatened to die.
Signs/Symptoms:
*The engine is hard to start but will with good amount of throttle.
*It idles ok for about 10-15 seconds then dies. I have to hold the throttle to keep it alive.
*It leaks gas out the right side tube sticking out. Thats weird.
*The choke lever doesn't seem to work anymore.
What I have done:
I drained the carbs and checked the fuel delivery just as the book says. I removed the spark plugs and found them to be fouled black. (I hope oil isn't getting in there) I cleaned them off and reinstalled them. Took it for a test ride and still the same symptoms. What could be the problem??
I called the dealership and told them everything and they told me that usually the first initial service that they perform will clear things up. I really hope so.
Any comments/suggestions are welcome. thanks.

Absolute BS. The bike should run peachy keen before the first service.
Same exact problem here though mine is an 04 with over 700 miles and I did the intial service and it worked for a while and then back to how you describe it.
take it back to the dealer, tell them they are talking bull, and demand they sort it
Ya, this is :bs: . I have 2200 miles on my '05 with NO problems...I have done all my own service on it. I have not adjusted the valves yet either. I give it about 1/8 to 1/4 throttle to start it when it is warm but this is reccomended anyhow to make it easier. It is a little cold natured when cold but this is just how the factory jetting is and it depends on the temperature. When you take it in make sure you say WARRANTY and not service. They should fix it at no charge providing you are not at 600 miles yet IMO. As for the fuel leaking out you would have to pinpoint if it is coming from the airbox vent or the tank overflow. Although the tank overflow is sealed from the tank when the filler cap is closed. If it is coming from the airbox drain it could possibly be the valves?? :dunno: as in causing the fuel to be spit back to the airbox. The latter is just an idea, some others more famliar with the bike might be able say if this is possible. I think timing would cause this rather than out-of-adjustment valves though....and the timing should not have changed.
Thanks for the info. Keep it comming.
An update: I took out the spark plugs one more time just to check them after that test run and found them to be black again with oil on the end of one of the spark plugs. :o Holy Jesus, help me! I know in cars that when that happens that means the rings are bad and oil is getting into the combustion chamber. But it doesn't smoke.
Rings bad after 400 miles?!? :bs: I scheduled an appointment For Thursday. Man I hope this isn't as bad as I think it is. Time will tell. Until then I think I will get back to my first love that I have been neglecting: My 02 Civic Coupe
Any more comments/suggestions or cuss words to tell the dealer welcome. JK
Don't take 'they all do that' for an answer. Normal GSs don't get crud on the plugs or burn oil or stall out after warmup or leak gas. They can either fix it or fork over a new one.
I still have my plugs from the 600mi service lying around (I had the bike from 1 mile on, and the 600mi service ended up being done at 1000), if they need a pic of what they're supposed to look like. :P
Should look similar to (http://phreakflier.smugmug.com/photos/24538175-O.jpg)
A little lean but this is what I had at about 800 miles. Engine shut off during idling condition. Stock jetting and exhaust.
I had the same thing happen to me on my E yesterday. Turned out that I had left the choke on about 1/4 of the way and forgot to turn it off before I rode it. It made the bike act like I was running out of gas and then go to about 1k at idle and eventually die unless I gave it some throttle. I bought new spark plugs and noticed that the old ones were sooted. It wasn't until later that I realized that I forgot to turn off the choke fully and that I was basically flooding it.
Your original post says that the choke lever doesn't work anymore. I suspect that therein lies the problem.
Either the choke is stuck open or, dare I say, you have it all the way on and think it is all the way off (off is away from you) which is a mistake I sometimes absentmindedly make when adjusting the choke.
If the choke is stuck open, you'll have to remove the tank and look at the cable attached to the carbs on the engine side of the carbs, should be real obvious.
First, though, make sure you actually have the choke off, and not on.
Also, when you fix the choke issue you are going to have to turn the idle screw in to raise the idle back up to 1200 warm.

Hi Budrick320
Go from what have told us from your ride it's sound like what happen with me when I first got my GS 500 03 New . You run out of gas, have you try looking this up in the owner manual. Here something that might help
"PRI (Prime) position
If the motorcycle has run out of fuel or has been stored for an extended period, there may not be any gasoline in the carburetor. In this instance the fuel valve lever should be turned to the "PRI" position. This will allow fuel to flow directily into the carburetor even though the engine is not operating. Upon starting the engine, be sure to return the lever to the "ON" position or if necessary, to "RES" position.
but don't leave it on "PRI" position too long if you read WARNING in your owner manual.
this may cover 1 & 2
about No. 3 It leaks gas out the right side tube sticking out. Thats weird.
That there for a reason if you overfill your tank gas will come out there.
No.4 sometimes you don't need to use your choke when the bike has been ridden for some time. if you do you can flood it. I have done this before I was kicking myself why Can't I get my bike to start ( this happened when I first got it & I had my friend standing around saying hey matt good bike can't you get it going  ) that was not good , but I try it again with out the choke on & guess what it starts :)
all the best matt :) your friend
