Title: 2000 gs with poor acceleration valve job?
Post by: zac6164 on July 02, 2005, 02:05:14 PM
bought a 2000 with 7400 miles runs well except at low rpms it really chugs and has poor power until about 5000 rpms.  I am not sure what work has been done on the bike but what is suggested for 7400 miles?

Actually, that sounds about right.  I will drop a little below 5,000 rpm when cruising, but if I want power it's all above 5,000.

If you ride at less than 4,000 you're lugging the engine and asking for eventual trouble....

It'll be low on power under 5000, but it shouldn't chug/lurch - how literal were you being?

it hesitates quite a bit in lower rpms. what are the symptoms when a valve job is needed?

Are you warming it up for a few minutes before riding it?

Any carb work done, make sure your choke is fully closing.

If the valves are too loose, you'll get more of a hesitation at higher speeds and rpm's. If the valves are too tight, you get a loss of power.

Does it hesitate or jerk?

If it jerks, check chain tension.
