Title: Idle self adjusts?????
Post by: Firewalker on July 03, 2005, 11:02:50 PM
Here's the problem.....the bikes idle is set to around 1500 or so and out of the blue........it starts idling at 4000.  I adjust the idle but I am thinking the vibrations are causing this to advance itself.  I haven't looked very closely but I wonder if the spring is just old and lost tension to keep this in place.  Any tips are appreciated.  I think I have located the spring on bikebandit if that is what it is.

TIA

Scott

While running the risk of sounding like a newbie smart ass, maybe the choke is sliding itself on?

I don't think that is smart ass at all.......but it will do it even if I am pushing the choke off.

I was actually thinking the spring that holds the plunger in. There's a pic a few days again, and I'm trying to remember that. (Not having actually looked at the choke). Its just that 4k is exactly where my bike goes with the choke completely in. Anyhow, might be worth a look.

dionysus might be talking about the photos in this recent thread (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18870).  NOTE: The carbs on 2001+ models are different -- the choke cable attaches closer to the left carb, deeper within the frame.  But the action is very similar.

Meanwhile, this post (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=133618#133618) might give you another idea to try.

Kerry, the second link applies to my bike.  The idle adjustment screw feels like it vibrates enough to let it turn itself.  Have you ever seen a bolt on a lawnmower that is too loose spin in the hole?  Anyway....I can adjust the idle and will idle correctly but in a few minutes it will start racing like I choked it.

A quick turn of this screw with my fingers will remedy this but I would rather not do it a lot due to the heat involved.

Is it possible the spring is not applying enough pressure to keep it in place?

BTW, the bike runs fine no smoking, no bogging.  Just races for no apparant reason.   :dunno:

Thanks again

Scott

sounds like  a weak spring, not enough pressure to keep the idle screw in position
