Title: Stock air filters, any difference?
Post by: jimn12 on July 05, 2005, 10:34:34 AM
Ok, I have a Marauder but it takes an air filter similar to the GS500. The stock Marauder filters have a cone inside that restricts the intake to about 1" diameter. I've cut my filters to a 1 3/4" diameter opening and rejetted the carbs to match.  I would like to try some GS500 filters, but would like some additional info first. I've found 4 different part numbers for filters for different 500 twin bikes from '93-'04. Are there any differences between the filters? They all look pretty much the same. Secondly, what is the minimum diameter of the filter opening? Thanks for any help you can give.

ps- I know I can get K&N replacement filters but I'd rather have the stock paper elements.

Oh ... madura 700's use the same filter as a GS ... a marauder is also the same you say ???
Anyway The paper and the air box itself are major chokers (no pun intended) ... so your opening 1 inch or 1 1/5 inch ... make no diff ...
Cool.

On the Marauder there is a huge difference between the 1" filter opening and the full 1 3/4" opening. After cutting the restriction out of my filters, I couldn't go over 35 mph untill I rejetted the carbs for more fuel. And once I get the mixture sorted out there was much more power.

OK I get it now ... The marauder filter itself is fairly free flowing ... the choker is the inlet ring ... OK GS filters aren't so. The restriction is 90% in the airbox. Even K&N drop-ins fare poorly in terms of flow due to the airbox choking the living crap out of it. GS air filters (paper from suzi) are also not choked in any way ... So your option is K&N Pod if you really want flow or stock all the way ... no mods possible with stock ...
Cool.
