would it be easy to swap a tail from an 02 and up gs 500 to an older one?
i like they way it looks, so would all i would need is a seat and the tail fairing thing. maybe the rear fender for turn signals?
ps i dont have a gs500 yet.
I think it's a bit more complicated than that -- the seat design changed, as well as the width of the tank. You may need to fabricate something to fill the gap between the new seat and the old tank.
I recall seeing pics of an R6 tail being grafted onto a GS500 (involving some fibreglass work near the tank) on http://www.gs500e.co.uk
If I was to Frankenstein a rear end onto a gs500, it wouldn't be from another gs500, though. :)

PM jiggersplat. He converted his older (91?) GS over to the 01 body. It looks fantastic. I believe it was somewhat of a "duct tape and bubblegum" affair to get it working right--definitely not a straight bolt-on.
The newer plastics are a LOT better looking, though, IMO.

when I was swapping my rear shock we had a 96 next to my 01 and the rear bodywork has different mounting points. Also, the seat issue mentioned above is important too. It can be done but its iffy...
Its not a bubble gum and chicken wire idea ...
I have done it and I sent a kit to Jiggersplat to do it (How did it work dude ...) but you'd need 2 grommet carriers, 1 bolt hole carrier with a threaded insert and one sissy bar bracket welded up and it will have to have ears and threaded inserts for the 4th bolt hole ... It will also have to be mated to a 01+ seat, and 01+ tail light ... and you'd have to bend the carrier for that to fit the light a bit better, but the earlier tank is useable with a bit of cutting ... or just leave the exposed grommet hole and deal with it ... might hit the seat though ... not sure. Oh yea all the numbers etc are per each side ... you have 2. You may be able to skip the sissy bar thing ... or make a tall sleeve and run bolts through that ... and not use that sissy bar ... cos it wont take much weight if you skimp out on the bracket. Also you need to make bearing blocks (I used aluminium ... you can use plastic or wood or rubber too ) for seat.
