Title: Looking for info on Phoenix, AZ
Post by: Zarathustra on July 11, 2005, 09:45:08 PM
hey guys, i havn't been around too much lately, been busy with breaking up with a girl, losing a job, finding a job, now working way too many hours at this job, and of course, riding my gs.  but, suffice to say, i've been busy.  anyway, as it turns out, i'm moving down to phoenix this september, and i know absolutely nothing about the city.  i have heard certain things about it in general, but, nothing at all specific (no one i know has ever really been there).  so i'm trying to find out where cool places are in the city.  here is my wish list:

i'm pretty much extremly liberal (not dfl liberal, progressive liberal).  i work in liberal politics so my views are fairly radical by most standards perhaps.  i have piercings and tattoos, like going to punk rock bars, and of course, like motorcycles.  i like having venues for shows near me, lots of places to go, and things to do.  for anyone familiar with minnespolis, i live in uptown, and like it here, but less yuppy would be cool.

so for anyone that knows Phoenix, if you could tell me anything about where i might find something like that in the city, or even any advice on where i should/should not live in the city, i would be really appreciative.  thanks a lot guys, and glad to see so many are still keeping it rubber side down.  if you live in the area down there, we should do some riding too, i need to learn some new roads.  :)

My sister just moved up here after living in the Phoenix area for a while.  It's a red-stater's red state, from all we experienced.  Move up here. ;)

if youre looking for an apt. there is a complex on deer valley rd directly accross from mmi, quite a diverse collection of residents, if you want a more laid back population check out peoria  or glendale, mostly older folks there, plus   , speedworld (dragstrip) is not too far from there, as far as night life goes, quite a diverse group of bars/clubs along bell rd. but more clubs/bars and even better    :?   adult venues further south into the city you go, heh oh yeah, i almost forgot, the further south you go the closer youll be to the gstwin god :thumb:

hang out in Tempe.  it ain't Berkeley, but it's still sort of a college town.  downtown Tempe can be fun.
Gold Bar (i think that's what it was called) is a coffee shop in Tempe that has crappy local paintings on the wall (with the occasional cool thing) and live music including the occasional halfway decent jazz trio.
check out Bookman's in Mesa.  it's one of the coolest used book/movie/video game stores i've ever been in (though not as cool as the one in Flagstaff).
The Mason Jar is a crappy little bar with horrible sound that has really good Metal bands come through fairly regularly.  i've seen Opeth and Nevermore there.

cheers,
will

Ed may have a spare room   I know, I'm going to hell...

Seriously, good luck with the move Zara...  I've only visited Phoenix a couple of times for business, and I don't have much good to say about the city, except the weather is great in Feb.!

Thanks for the invite Stephen. :thumb:

Ah, Arizona ... where even the Indians are cowboys, and the gays vote Republican. Arizona, the land of the free, the home of the brave, and lots of guns!

There's much more than the heat to make Arizona hell for a liberal. Indie is right though, Tempe could be considered a "Reservation" for liberals.
