so, I was getting ready to go home. the bike was sitting on the hot sun waiting for me. I've put 320 miles so far (brand new bike), and the ambient temperature was 102F
I start the bike, runs for 2 seconds and dies. Start again, nothing. Crank the choker and start the bike and it dies even faster, move choker back to off and start again, dies.
So basically, whenever I tried to use the choker the bike would die almost instantly. Whithout choker, the bike died after 2 or 3 seconds.
The only thing that worked was turn on bike and inmediately hold the accelerator up at 4000rpm (right hand) for some 40 seconds, then the bike was warmed up (on a 102F ambient).
So whats going on?
I know i taking it to the dealer pretty soon (500/600 mile check and re-torque), but Im curious.
Do you have any gas? Your initial maintenence is the most crucial tune up you will ever get on the GS. It is possible your engine didn't mate properly if you didn't follow the break in procedure. Your best bet would be to take it into your dealer to get serviced anyways kill 2 bird with one stone instead of sitting on the computer trying to figure it out.
Actually, that's not unusual behavior in such high temperatures. Not only is the choke unnecessary when it's that hot, but it can be downright counterproductive.
Have you done any rejetting? I usually don't have any problem starting (without choke) in the 90+ degree range, but my bike has stock jetting (lean), a K&N in-airbox filter (a tad more lean) and I live at 4,800+ feet (balances the mixture out a bit). With larger jets or the stock air filter I would probably go through the same routine in July around here.
good to know Kerry, I was having similar prob also.
