I have been reading posts all morning about the wileyco exhaust on the gs. Everybody always says it sounds great, but I want to know what kind of performance gain is had with the wileyco and rejetting. For 100 bucks it sounds like a great price, but other than sounding cool is there really a performance difference?:dunno:

I think the bike is 100% better with Wileyco and jet kit... but that is my opinion. I dont have any numbers for you, but it is much funner to ride.

I agree. After I installed the jets for the pipe, the motor feels much more spirited and I am sure it is faster. After spending 2 years on this thing, you get into a routine for accelerating around the neighborhood or whatever. Lately I've had to keep an eye on my speedo because it gets going faster than it did before. Mid-rpm roll-on's improved quite a bit as well. I also have a Bob B ignition advancer that I've had for a while. I have the choked flange from srinath and jetted to 40 pilots/127.5 mains. The choked flange pre-jetting left a flat spot or noticeable hesitation between 6K and 7K. It was running fine but it was really down on power before jetting. I left the "choker" on the flange to keep some semblence of back pressure and low-end torque ;)
Thanks for the input guys. I am considering doing the wileyco setup. I would like to waken the motor up a bit. Was it pretty east to install?
Wileyco install with srinath's flange is very easy. The only tools you need is a pipe cutter or a hack saw to cut the original header. I recommend the pipe cutter, it makes a nice clean straight cut. Some allen wrenches to take to header bolts loose, and some sockets for the can.
The DJ re-jet kit was pretty easy as well for me, but I have take the carbs off several times and am very familar with the parts. That pretty much entails taking off the gas tank to get to the carbs, and of course remembering where all the hoses go.
I def reccomend the Dyno Jet kit as it has all the correct parts to use, and will remove any guess work form the install.
I would also suggest going with a K&N filter either lunchbox, or the drop in.
If you do the Lunchbox you will do a stage 3 jet install, if you use the stock air box with k&N dropin then you do a stage 1.
the whole thing pipe, and re-jet probibly took me a good 5-6 hours. But it was worth it.

I haven't installed my Wileyco+Flange yet, but I'm thinking about rejetting at the same time. Looking at the Dynojet site linked, I notice two things: 1) there is no jet kit listed for '01-'02. I'm 95% sure of this but will ask anyway: the '04-'05 kit should work for my '01, right? Same bike, except for the oil cooler and fairing?
2) I notice there's no stage 3 kit for '04-'05. I've got a K&N lunchbox, I think (installed by previous owner); will a stage 1 kit be okay? I don't have much time/space to wrench, or many tools, or lots of wrenching experience, so I'd prefer to follow vf's advice and use a kit...

I'm not saying it wouldn't work, I just perfer to be safe. that is, I have read more than one post where perople are having problems gitting this setup to work. the only problems I had were because I did not follow the insturctions fully, and once I did, the DJ kit worked perfectly.
Plus the DJ kit has a tapered needle. and the stock one is very blunt. I understand that on pre 01 kit the tapered needle helps as there is no mid jet.

Usually DIY works just fine ... if DIY didn't work ... most likely you had some else wrong ... DJ wont work either ... there have been a few cases of DJ kits not working right even when nothing else was wrong ... now DJ is real iffy about how many plugs to install in the slides and that slide drilling part has more people turning off it ... That drilling is needed to compensate for the drastic taper of needle ...

I had no problems with the drilling of the slides, the also include the drill bit and the tap for the threads.
the key I think, is to go slow and carfully, it is plastic and the hole you are drilling is only slightly bigger than the stock.
their directions are very clear.
like i was telling a friend last nite.. i fell in love with my bike all over again when i installed the can, lunchbox and did a rejet

I ordered the Mikuni pilots and mains. Bike runs great though I am still relearning when I need to choke. It seems to start better if I get the engine turned over and then give it some choke. don't have any clue as to why that is :dunno:
Can i be lazy enough to ask.....
i have a 1990 gs500e and am becoming more interested as i hear about rejetting, and wileyco.
Can a noob ask... what is rejetting, and what is wileyco?
And can someone give me links to purchase the best setup for my bike (rejet kit, air filter, muffler) + is it worth doing.
If im asking too much just let me know

My nitehawk seems to want to start without choke too ... maybe cos its super hot weather ... See if the bikt will start if you blip the throttle right with hitting the starter ... My Virago 535 wanted to do that, and if I remember so does my maxim ... In any case ... some little quirks ... better to learn ... see how it does in winter ... that is when real carburetion comes into play ...

DJ does make a jet kit for your bike, (see my earlier post with link). Or you can do the DIY. Basically what the re-jet does is allow more fuel to enter into the combustion chamber.
A k&n pod or lunchbox filter will allow more air into the combustion chamber.
Which brings us to the high flow muffler... Now that we have more fuel and air in our mix we need somewhere for that icreased mix to exit after its burned.
In short a re-jet, pipe, and filer will uncork the bike, and make the engine perform better.

I am assuming this suggestion would be with the wileyco pipe on.
I am at 4200 feet and riding temps range from 50-100 degrees. Will the jetting combo you listed above still be optimal? If so how many #4 washers under the needle? 1 or more?
4200 feet ... may have to drop 1 main size ... making it about right for the stock ... strange ... but try 1 washer and 125 ... then if needed take out washer ... you'd never have to need more than 1 #4washer ... some else is wrong if you do ... now if 125 and no wahser is still rich .. then drop to 122.5 ... heck you may wanna start with stock and jet up ... how is it right now ... Especially up high ... if you're rich now ... leave it be ...

OK that couldn't be more confusing ...
But here it is in a bit better format ...
You need to swap to 40 pilots ... and carbs have to come off for that ... might as well do 40/125/1/3 ... then if you're rich up top take out washer ... easier ... whole carbs dont come out ... you open the top and take it out. Then if you wanna lean it further ... open the floats (carbs cab sit on the bike ... you put in allen head bolts on the floats and dont gorilla tighten them ... you can get the floats off and swap mains out ... so makes sense to do it backwards ... sorta ... Or do 40 pilots, 3 turns the first sweep and add washer or 125 later ...
