Title: DOUBLE DISC FRONT END
Post by: spirit33 on July 20, 2005, 07:03:02 PM
HOWDY ALL,
I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THE CHEAPEST WAY OF SETTING UP A DOUBLR DISC FRONT END FOR THE GS AND BELIEVE I HAVE COME ACROSS ONE. THE SUZUKI ACROSS ( I'M NOT SURE IF THEY HAVE THE SAME NAME IN THE US ) LATE MODELS AFTER 99 HAVE THE CALIPER AND ROTOR SETUP ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE TO THE GS. I BELIEVE THESE ARE THE SAME AS WHAT IS ON THE GS. I FOUND THAT THE GS FRONT RIM ALREADY HAS THE MOUNTING HOLES FOR A ROTOR ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. HAS ANYONE TRIED THIS ?
OR DOES ANYONE KNOW OF AN ALTERNATIVE BRAKE SETUP FOR THE LEFT SIDE FRONT ?

THANKS VERY MUCH.

PAUL :dunno:

Several people have written about using a used Katana front end - including wheel and brakes.

From the FAQ forum:

Weekend Wrenching: Installing a Katana Front End (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13673)

The Bandit 400 has the caliper mounted on the left side. They are not very common in the US. Katana's are a dime a dozen. Plus you get larger fork tubes and heavier stock springs. But there are draw backs, which are listed in my write-up.

because i'm on a limited budget i have ruled out a complete front end replacement. if the across is suitable i should be able to do the conversion for around 200-300 aussie dollars (100-175 us dollars)

I have 2 Kat front ends that I am rebuilding. When I am finished, I will have less than $100 in each of them. That is for everything...wheel, rotors, caliper, master cylinder, forks, and triple clamps. Takes time to find the right deals.

Not familiar with the bikes that you have access to so that may be your best option. You may want to replace the GS master cylinder with one from a GSXR or other dual caliper bike. The stock GS m/c will feel mushy with dual rotors. Also, run 2 separate lines to the calipers.

KATANA FRONT ENDS ARE A HOTLY SORTED ITEM IN AUSTRALIA AND CAN REACH QUITE A HIGH PRICE DUE TO AVAILABILITY  AND CONDITION OF THE PARTS. JUST A RIM ALONE HERE WOULD SET YOU BACK 350-450 DOLLARS AUSSIE.

89-97 Kat 600/750 use the same wheels as the GS, just the colors are different.

No and No.

Kat rotors are smaller in diameter and they use 4 piston calipers.
