I hope this isn't a dumb question, but it wouldn't be the first time...
How can I tell if I have a sealed o-ring chain, or otherwise? Not sure if the chain on my bike is original or a replacement... Knowing this would help me in my lube choices...
thanks

check to see if you have a master link by putting down the centerstand, which i coincidently don't have, or jack the rear up and while in neutral rotate the wheel. The master link will have a clip on the side of the link that the rest don't.
p.s. i personally don't know why lubes would be different but maybe someone else knows... i'd be interested since i just put a new x-ring chain on mine. Man, what a difference it made having a good chain that isn't stretching...
by the way if you do replace you'll need an "X" or "O" ring chain.. 520 x 110.
nisus i seen your using x ring. I just bought an x ring and it was cheaper than the parts unlimited oring the dealer i have stocks and it was tons better, i havent even had to give it a tighten yet and i have about 800 miles on it,and usually after about 400 the o-ring needed to be tightened. oh yea i got mine on dennis kirk for 58 bucks .
If the chain is original equipment, some of the sideplates will say "D.I.D.". Some of the others should say 520V (which is an O-ring chain) or 520VM (which is an X-ring).
For some clues about what's available out there, see my Chains & Sprockets (http://www.bbburma.net/Documents/GS500_Chains&Sprockets.txt) page. (Corrections and additions welcome!)
