Title: Nose Dive question??.......
Post by: mastrind on July 22, 2005, 10:35:31 AM
twice in the last 2 weeks I've been in a situation where someone in front of me slammed on their brakes for no reason at all.....which took me quite by surprise.....

I've noticed that when I braked hard the nose dove a lot....and the front end got kind of squirmish.....

so would getting new springs and changing out the fork oil make a noticeable difference......should I look into getting different brake lines....or is there something else I should do....

thanx all....

Do a search for "Progressive Springs" and you'll find your answer; I believe it's the #1 recommended mod by the vets on this site.

Mine does that too, as well as making a horrendous "Clack" when I hit a good sized bump or pothole (it's bottoming out).

I'm planning on replacing the springs and redoing the fork seals as soon as I can.

Install Progressive fork springs.  Try the normal 10 wt fork oil at first.  It the forks are still too soft, switch to 15 wt oil.

Follow the write-up on Pablo's site.

thanx guys....I wasn't sure because I'm not on a GS (SV guy remember - see my sig)....

....I know the GS had a soft front end.....I changed the fork oil and installed pvc caps on top of stock springs on my GS....I just wanted to make sure this would be good to do on the SV.....allright....now I've gotta price some springs....

thanx again....

oops, didn't realize you were talking about an SV.  I have no experience with them, sorry.

How are you at using the rear brake?

1.  I've been on Socal's site for a long time, but most of the time those people are just too full of themselves....svrider.com is good too, but mostly I just prefer the input of the people here.....

2.  I use the rear brake just fine...

3.  Basically my situation is that people here basically don't pay attention when their driving....I've been forceably removed from my lane frequently due to cell phones.....

the specific situations here were quite similar, basically someone cuts across three lanes of road, gets in front of me, then slams on their brakes because they want to make a left turn.....both times I followed the driver and gave them a nice tongue lashing about paying more attention to what they're doing.....

boy, were they surprised too.....one guy was very apologetic, of course the other guy wasn't.....but I probably scared the crap out of them....

YOU SOLD MY PRECIOUS GS RIGHT AFTER YOU GOT IT!! GO AWAY!!!

On a side note, you might want to try progressive springs, maybe up the weight in the fork oil. Also check your seals for leakage of any kind. How does your brake lever feel? Does it feel squishy?

yeah the word on the street is that the sv has almost the same rate fork springs as the gs.  progressives will help, so will emulators and heavier fork oil.    what helped me a lot, was learning how to stoppie and getting comfortable doing it from speed. also if you can go steal some road cones and practice swerving at speed on a deserted hwy.  unless you can emergency brake instintually you are taking a sword to the gunfight, so to speak.
