I think $72/hour is pretty standard around my way.  No need to go to a mechanic with most problems on the GS.  Betwen a manual and this board, even a wrenching novice like me can do nearly all the work.

Just curious:  What exactly would you have a mechanic look at?  (You have to tell them something when you drop off the bike.  If you say something open-ended like "Just check it over" ... who knows how much "checking" they'll feel is justified, and at $60+/hr!)

I see from your previous posts that your '04 had a minor lowside accident, and that your sidestand switch may have been goofed up.  Were you able to get the bike to start, and to run in gear?

What other problems does your bike have?  (Besides the scraped fairing.  If I were you I would either take it off for now, or live with the scrapes until you have ridden a lot more miles.)
