Title: Prescription glasses for riding
Post by: Mountaineer on July 26, 2005, 06:56:30 AM
Has anybody out there looked into (no pun intended) prescription sunglasses or goggles for riding? I use a windshield, but I also use those molded drop-behind sunglasses that work with my regular bifocals (blind as a bat without 'em).

Now that I have vision insurance, I might be able to afford some really good Rx sunglasses that provide maximum protection on the super-great GS500.

Thanks for any clues.

I wear wiley X SG1's I had prescription clear and tinted made... you can get the glasses cheap on Ebay.. I paid $30. for my seccond set. Then you can have lenses made for them.. That was a bit expensive.. around $200. for the 2 diff. types I have..  But these are by far the best riding glasses ever. I even use them for shooting (the lenses are ballistic)

Do you wear a full-face helmet?  If so, any pair of prescription sunglasses that fits well in the helmet will do you fine.

If you don't wear a full-face helmet I gotta ask.... don't some of those bugs really sting?

If you're gonna wear them behind a hemlet with a visor, don't get polarized lenses in your sunglasses.  my prescription sunglasses are polarized, and I get all kind of weird distortions and colored glare through the visor.

You can take any glasses and turn them into sunglasses...  Just get some tinted prescription lenses put in them.

Your best bet is to take your helmet shopping with you.  Walk around the store and find a pair that works for you...  Then get some tinted lenses installed.

(Make sure you call to see what your insurance covers as far as tinted lenses...  and call the store to see if they take your insurance....  Not that many places take VSP.   :dunno: )

My glasses and prescription sunglasses were a pain in the eye/cheek/forehead/ear/etc. to get on inside my helmet, so I got laser surgery done, and bought a tinted visor. Awesome!

I still sometimes wear the sunnies under the old clear visor when I'll be out until after dark. They're just normal Raybans (I took the prescription lenses out and put the original plain ones back in), and the'ye a bit wraparoundy, so they usually fit in okay.

I had prescription lenses put in a pair of frames I found at the optometrist that have a lot of wraparound.  I never ride with my visor down (I like bugs) so it works perfect.

I'm gonna check ebay for those glasses - those are tight!

they make both presc wrap around, which is dependent on your presc, or the better option is the sunglasses with interchangable lenses and prescription inserts. RP glasses are freaking awesome, the nosepieces and earpieces are moldable for fit, so you are gonna be hard pressed to find a better fitting pair of glasses IMO, worlds better than Oakley or similar brands. I have beeu using a pair of ekynox with the presc inserts for about 3 years now, and I can't say enough good stuff about them. they can be found at most decent cycling shops.  :thumb:
