Title: Canadian motorcycle rules, eh?
Post by: manofthefield on July 26, 2005, 10:30:44 AM
Well, my long distance ride with my motorcycle club at school is coming up soon, and It looks like maybe half of the trip will be through Canada.  I was wondering what rules rules I should be aware of as we ride through, ie.  Helmet Laws, gear laws...   Thanks

Cars suck, Canadian motorcycles rule?

Well, rememer to read the little numbers on the inside of the dial while you're up there...

Gear laws won't matter because you're ATGATT anyway, no?  :P

1. Helmet required
2. Drive in KM not Miles
3. Tim Hortons is not someone's house, it's a coffee shop.
4. Watch out for wildlife
5. Watch out for Canadians.

That is all.

not that i'm suggesting it, but when i went to toronto, i got pulled for speeding.  Just about twice the speed limit... when the cop... (who was in a pinto!) pulled me over and noticed i was from the states, he just kinda muttered "Damn" and warned me.  I'd assume tickets can't be inforced on us.

Sweet.

Have fun.
Remember to bring some $1's and $5's in US dollars.  There's nothing like paying for a beer with a US $20 and getting back $18 in Canadian dough.
The teacher from my motorcyle class said insurance is required.

1. Dog sleds always have right-of-way.
2. Book your igloo's early, they rent out fast
3. Pick up your complimentary case of Molson Canadian on the way across the border.
4. You must have a CSA certified cup holder if you want to drink beer while riding the bike.
5.  Don't forget your toque.
6. Don't ask anyone for a "candy bar".  They won't know what you're talking about.
7. Don't worry about speeding.  The mounties can't keep up on their horses.

Kokanee (sp?) is the best Canadian beer.  If asked by a local, Ottawa is the capital.

Other than that, do as you please.  What's the worst that could happen?  Your American.  JK!

What are candy bars called?

You wouldn't think it would be necessary to iterate this, but following that interesting post from last week....

...carrying a handgun in your tankbag is a real no-no in Canada.    :guns:

Try as many as you can, but at least start with Alexander Keith's or Moosehead.

Still a huge no-no... seriously.  You will not pass GO, and you will not collect $200.

They have more guns per capita than we do.

Sure. Short-sleeved shirts, tee-shirts, tank-tops ...  Canadians can wear any of these and bare their arms.  ;) Sorry, had to say it. In fact, in Ontario women have the legal right to walk around topless. (We're all equal under the law. :thumb: )

Just don't pull a handgun. :nono:  Only cops and bad guys carry in public.  Leave it at home or delare it at the border and pick it up on the way back.

It is illegal to have a concealed weapon in Canada.  In fact, if you own a handgun you must have written permission from the police to transport it anywhere, and even that is highly constrictive.  Lets say that you belong to a gun club and you go there every Monday night.  You are issued a permit from the police that states you are allowed to carry the gun (locked and unloaded at all times) to and from the gun club within a certain time frame (lets say between 6 & 8 pm) and you can only drive a specific route to get there.   You cannot transport that gun anywhere other than the gun club, you cannot make any stops between your house and the gun club, you cannot take a different street or route to get there or home, and you cannot have the gun in public other than driving to or from the gun  club.  That's why we just all carry rifles.

WTF, I didn't get a free case of Canadian last time I went to Canada, and that time I was there to drink.  Not sure if we'll have time for beer on this trip.

Looks like I should be good... always wear helmet, carry insurance, and don't carry weapons. Now I just have to remember to go 100 in Km/h not mph and to stop at Tim Hortons.  Thanks

HAHAHA. hahaha. thats gold. lol

No concealed weapons. Big ass no. I got a couple rifles myself, and have my permit to obtain a restricted firearm (handgun) but wouldnt get one because of the tough law against it. If you go in manitoba let me know. Our country rocks, and i know for fact that Winnipeg has the hottest girls in all of Canada. Stop by.

..just a few more notes..

You can and (likely) will get a ticket if you're caught speeding, or for that matter, breaking any other traffic and non-traffic related laws.

We have a ton of local microbrew beers.  Try them all if you get a chance.  If you happen to be downtown Toronto, visit Smokeless Joe's -- their beer selection is incredible.  It goes without saying, you should probably try this at the end of your riding day  :thumb:   On that note :

Sweet.

From what I know.. or at least in Ontario.. traffic violation record is linked between Ontario and some major US states.. like NY, California..
