well, not actualy the clutch itself, but the cable......that screw that is behind the little plate that is being held by two philips heads (right below the lower cable adjustment) is constantly getting loose...i tightened it, but then the clutch doesn't fully engage, so i had to loosen it, now it the screw loosens itself up due to vibration.......on more thing, there is a nut around that screw, but both the screw and the nut rotate together...is that nut suppose to act as a locknut?
please help, it's really annoying to stop at every gas station and tighten this thing up
Yes, the locknut is supposed to act as a locknut, and that's why it keeps loosening.
1st - Loosen all of your adjusters starting with the handlebar, loosen the locknut all the way out and screw the barrel adjuster all the way in.
Then the one on top of the countershaft cover, loosen the locknut all the way up the shaft, and then screw down the adjusting nut.
2. Take the plate off. Loosen the locknut first. Back the screw off til it feels loose like it is no longer contacting the clutch shaft. Then slowly turn it in until you feel it just touch the clutch shaft. Tighten the locknut.
Observe the amount of freeplay the clutch lever has with the handlebars at full lock left. Use the cover mounted adjuster to take out most of that slack. Then use the handlebar mounted adjuster to fine tune the freeplay to 1mm, or to your individual taste, feel and preference.

done, seems to work.....the locknut was catching on a bur on the screw....got that fixed and loktited the screw as well for good measure (used removable locktite).....I think it's fixed for now (at least i hope it is)....got to start carry tools with me though
I'm afraid that if you ever decide to adjust that screw again your gonna be sorry you put locktight on it cause as it is it's quite a mission to loosen that locknut because of the rotation :)
as far as i understand the cable ajustments could be done w/o loosening that screw ever again, and with my experience, removable locktite plus parts that only had brief cleaning equals very crappy bond....so at this point i am not worried.......if i am wrong about cable adjusting issue, please let me know
You're correct about the cable adjusters adjusting just the cable freeplay, they are also good indicators of when it might be a good time to replace your cable, provided you also inspect and lube your cable.
