Thinking of replacing my winter truck with one of these, but I'm sort of torn for the reason in the topic.

I had a friend who purchased a TT in 2001 and had major built quality problems with it. It is the only TT with which I've had direct experience; he had problems with the interior panels working loose and breaking the mounting tabs, suspension issues, and had it in the shop three times for a problem with the tranny. He eventually wound up pursuing a lemon law case with the dealer and having Audi USA buy his car back from him.
At that time the TT was manufactured in Yugoslavia; I'm not sure if it is still, or if they have their build quality problems fixed, but I would stay away. The TT is overpriced for what you get, anyway.
A friend of mine owns an audi/volvo/saab dealership and I'm in the position to get one with moderate miles for 10 grand, this is why I ask.
man, that is one of the best looking cars on the road today, hands down.
i don't know if it's a chick-car, but i'm betting it's a chick-magnet.
dead sexy.
That is NOT a chick car.
I'd like to have one. Throw some 19's on there with some 30 series tires. . . intake and exhaust. That would perfect.
i nv u
nope not a chick car IMO neither.......wouldn't be my choice since i am prejudice against lots of things german) and the audi's quality was/is crap for the last few years...but in any case, great fun car as long as you get quatro :thumb: ......i do like the looks of 350z better though :P
its only a chick car for VTNewb
Definitely like the Z more. The back seat on the TT is *useless*. I had more room in the back of my 924S than that car. The Z is a much nicer car, fun as hell to drive and IMO sexier.
*Editage*
Forgot about the winter factor. If you plan on seeing snow, don't plan on driving the Z. My buddy can't even move his in the driveway if it is remotely icy out.
I'm not a fan of the 350z mostly because its damn slow for what you pay for it, assuming were going for a pure sports car.
The TT would be for winter use only. Quattro of course.
I've heard so many quality nightmares about current Audis in general... and it doesn't help that I think the TT looks like it came free with a Happy Meal.
I don't know why people think they need 4WD (or AWD) for the wintertime. You need 4WD for offroading. You need traction for the winter. If you have good snow tires, driving on snow will be just like driving anywhere else with a RWD car. If you don't have good snow tires, 4WD/AWD won't do you a bit of good.
It was fun to pass SUVs and pickups on all-seasons that had spun out or gotten stuck on the shoulder when I would go out in my E30 or my Miata with snow tires.

Driving my M5 in the winter is a nightmare with hackapolitas, the best studded snows you can buy. Not to mention I live on a giant hill.
Hakkapeliitta?
I lived on a big hill up in Bellevue. The snow would melt a little during the day, then re-freeze at night to make a steep icy hill that was hard to walk up - but I could drive home. The Toyos I had were just awesome. They now make a "microbit" tire - walnut shells in the tire that make it act studded in snow, but don't chew up the roads.
The M5 is a very heavy car, though (I'm assuming E39?), and it has just massive built-in understeer (like most cars these days). A lighter, well-balanced car is a better wintermobile.
I wish E39, E34 though. Euro spec fortunatly, bought it from a BMW tech.

Crown King Road in AZ is a popular place to take 4x4s, especially when it's a bit muddy. my bro my dad and i once took my brother's vw rabbit there. we had a ball. we passed so many big ole 4x4s that had gotten bogged down in the mud. we laughed a lot at their expense.
my vw transporter was also an excellent off road vehicle. however, for driving on ice, nothing beats my mom's subaru. that AWD is pure gold on ice. with similarly good tires, it would easily outdo any other vehicle in our family for firm footing.
cheers,
will
No..not a chick car, nor a chick magent...more like a clown car.
We work directly with the automotive industry and because of that I've been able to drive over 3200 different vehicles in the last 6 years. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it. :thumb: Considering a large majority of TT buyers are females (according to Jato and Edmunds data), I would consider the TT to definitely be a "chick" car, specifically the convertible. For the money, there are a lot better cars out there. It's been a while since I drove the TT, but from what I remember it wasn't a bad car by any means. It's simply overpriced and underpowered compared to the competition (ie. Honda S2000, Nissan 350Z, etc...).
Official audi data says 70% of buyers are males in the 40s, so I'm not worried anymore. Thanks all!
Quote from: VTNewbso I'm not worried anymore
Still, that doesn't surprise me. Far from being a chick car - every woman I know thinks it's the silliest-looking thing ever, and the guys I know think it's cool.
nothing like a GS owner to worry about image when they buy a vehicle
where were these questions when you bought the gs.... use the same thing you used then... buy what you want and can afford, not what anyone else wants you to buy :thumb:
Yea most Miata's are also driven by middle aged men ... that doen't make it ... "Not a chick car" now you dont have to worry much though ... The GS is a chick bike and middle aged men outnumber "chicks" here by like 1000 to 1 ... ... so its a small step closer to Chick-Dom for you ...
Now that Maxim you got ... its no chick bike, so I guess you're holding on with 1 finger ...
And Audi's going back to the 80's have been cheaply made IMHO ... that whole Yugoslavian bit ... I have often thought of them as the Yugo from Germany ... not they are the Yugo from Yugoslavia ... Figures
Cool.
Srinath.
i have a buddy who has owned several Audi's and i have to say that his Favorite is the 2001 S4 h bought about 3 months ago. The TT is over priced when you compare it to the S4 and S6 bang for your buck. Here are a site of interest though.

Nothing I own is very effeminant (very bad spelling), My only GS was a 77 GS4000 8) But meh, I just didn't want to get harrased by my friends ;]
QuoteIs the Audi TT a chick car?
No.
Chick MAGNET!
The VW Cabrio is a chick car.
I would test drive a few different models... heh... I mean... A few different cars. I really hated the 1.8T engine. Serious turbo lag.
Yeah, my dad thinks he needs AWD too, my parents' new house has a steep narrow driveway. He's looking at an A6. The 2.7L turbo seems to be a great engine, much better than the 1.8 turbo A4 we test drove. I'm not a big fan of TT's, but I do like their interiors. If I were you I would go for an A4 or S4, or just get a Subaru.
I agree with roadstergal, for the most part, snow tires are the best way to get around in the snow. AWD does help though, I had a Subaru Legacy GT with AWD and even with shitty tires on it, it got around great in the snow. But then I liked drifting around the corners... Thing to remember is that it still stops much worse than any vehicle with snow tires.
I currently have a 4wd Tacoma, and there is one reason it is far superior to any snow tired car: I can go through the 2 foot snowbank(icebank) that the plow leaves half a foot from my bumper. Oh, and I can transport my bike in the bed

Oh yea a 77 GS400 is not a chick bike ... Chick in this context implies Young/hot/attractive girl ... its a Hag's bike ... old, ugly, shrivelled, Trailer residing hag ... Yea Dont worry ... I have hers and HERS versions of them ... Like her and her Lesbo/Lumberjack partner ... Hers = an 82 KZ440, and HERS = the 82 XS650 ... still bailing me out is my Maxim ... and of course the Viagra 1100 implies I am an old dude ... and yea the eli 1000 and 900 Yea I am well and truly bailed out ... and of course the Nighthawk 650 says I am a cheapskate regardless of gender or orientation or age ...
Cool.
Srinath.
gotto love the maxim.

To rephrase - guys dig TTs, while women find manufactured ones to be silly.
:P
Well since I plan on picking up chicks using my own charms and not my car, I think I'll be fine. :)
