Hey!
I was at the Dollar store today, and I saw this shoulder type bag.. ya know one strap. Anyway I thought.. Man.. that looks like it would make a sweet tank bag!? So.. I paid $1.00 for it. Took it home.. cut the strap off of it and laid it on my tank. SWEET! it fits just right. I took apart 3 old Hard Drives I had and took the "Super Strong Magnets" out of em.. Sewed em' inside the bag, and BAM!!!! $1.00 Tank bag! I love it. I have been wanting to get something to just hold my wallet and cellphone and this thing is just right !
What do you all think? :)

Small. Nondescript. Cheap. Fits the shape of the tank.
As long as the magnets hold, that's pretty sweet!
Brilliant!!!!! :)
pandy
It fits the shape of the tank perfect! :) and the magnets are VERY strong.. it aint comin off :thumb:
Wow!
A man who is handy? Who would have thought.
:thumb: :thumb:
nice! i have to say tho.. thats pretty cheesy lol. why not just blow 20-30 bucks and get a name brand tankbag off ebay?
because....30 bucks is about 1000 miles of gas money
:)

Hmmm.. I spent $1.00 !!!!! That was the point :) I guess I can rip a tag off one of my Abercrobie and Fitch shirts and sew it on there  Then will I be cool ???
I'll send you one of my ICON patches that fell off my tank bag.
Those hard drive magnets are very strong. Will they affect your credit cards or cell phone?
The harddrive magnets are super strong and yea they will affect the cell and other electronics ... but should start returning to basic normal behavior when you take them off ... fringe benefit ... it will separate a fair bit of rust and hole it out of the fuel line ... atleast as long as it on there ...
Cool.
Srinath.
...
those super-strong magnets will light your tank on fire! :o
*me runs to the dollar store*
and I thought I was cheep
If you have a color screen cell the magnets will change the color and it will be messed up if you leave it there for a while. This happened to me when I put my backpack with my cellphone in it in the back of my friends trunk with his 3 12" subwoofers.

man beat me to it...
i was gonna ask him about that...
What does the underside look like? It's not going to scratch the paint in putting it on / taking it off, is it?
My Nelson-Rigg tank bag cost 42 times your bag, but it has a rubberized bottom -- won't leave a mark. Hope yours is equal to the task. :dunno:
 The bottom is made from the same stuff as the top :) it is very soft, somewhat water proof material and it has no rough spots or metal on it. I sewd the magnets on the inside to keep the contact points soft as well. I dont think it will scratch anything :thumb:
I also dont think that it will hurt my phone or cards.. Other tank bags have magnets in them!? Mine arent like friggn electro magnets or anything :) They shouldnt damage anything. I have put an old towel in the bottom of it though, just to keep things from getting stuck on the magnets :) I do have a color phone to, So I will keep checking, and let ya know if it starts acting up :thumb:
Thought I would bring this back to see what the newer members think :thumb:
I dont use mine much anymore but its still my favorite mod :icon_mrgreen:
Here is an AWESOME step by step of my idea by:

Ah, my Oxford Sports tank bag with rubber bottom does leave the marks on the paint, have to put an old T-shirt below it. But that is most likely cause I painted the bike myselft and although there are 3 coats of clear coat on it, it is not super smooth.
Good work with the tank bag, I love those, much better than having a bag on your shoulders.
Cheers,
Doug.

Yea.. and I have, but I feel much safer with my $300 cell where I can see it :thumb:
OK...
Time again to revive the $1 Tank bag thread... Calamari! You still out there?? He did an awesome how-to of my idea but its gone :(
I will try and dig up my original pics and post them up again :thumb:
I love HD magnets. I have a couple of them holding up crap on my wall  Don't drop the bag on the tank or you might have some nice dents on the tank- they took the paint off a fridge door after trying to pull em off
Found 2 pics.. I know I had some better ones but...

I revived this thread for another member who said he cant afford a tank bag...
NO MORE FANNY PACK! :icon_mrgreen:
:thumb:
Clever idea!
Any detail photos of the magnets and how they were fastened? (i guess this would be in the now-unavailable HOWTO you mentioned)
Yea.. Cal made nice little pouches to hold the magnets.. I just stuck them on the inside of the bag with one small square of old t-shirt fabric under and one over it and sewed through the screw holes in the mag. :thumb:
i still have mine although I moved on to a Nelson Rig bag
As side note.. My bag that I made NEVER caused any damage to my tank... The nelson bag however scratched the SH#& out of my tank
this is pretty cool.. I may have to see about doing something like this

That's exactly what I call CREATIVITY
good job with the tank bag!!
Arrrrgh ! You're undermining my cheapskate credibility !
You just need a $4 skull n cross bones patch on it now ;)
All the time I've spent surfing the forum.I never ran into this.Mods need to sticky this ,in my requested forum"Touring Tips and Tricks."
One thing to watch with tank bags and scratching, if you take it on and off a bunch of times and are not careful about covering the magnets you can pick up all sorts of ferrous crap, shavings and such, as well as the usual, paperclips, staples and not even know it.
I love ghetto/DIY mods, even simple things have great value.

No, people just need to document them in the Wiki (that's what it's for). By sticky-ing everything you just clutter up the first page of the forum.
Im going to the dollar store tonight!

I dont know what happend to his how-to. I didnt make it, he liked my idea and made a cool how to but I guess its gone now :bs:
Its not rocket science :icon_mrgreen: He had some good info on taking apart the hard drive though. If anyone has any questions you can PM me, ill be happy to help :thumb:
It IS in the Wiki. I put the info there about a year ago. 8)
Oh, wait. I looked up and it is no longer there!!! Damn! :icon_twisted: Maybe we need to moderate the Wiki after all.
I can pull apart a hard drive when I get back to work on Tuesday and take plenty of pics of the process. Very simple and yes, the magnets are strong as hell! The disks make really good wind chimes as well! :icon_lol:
