Title: Slow, slow, slow, and slow.
Post by: fat_sac on July 28, 2005, 05:21:01 PM
Everyone tells me I was expecting too much from the bike the first time I mounted it, but I thought "Hey, I hear all the guys on the internet talk about how much fun they have on theirs, what could possibly be the problem?" Much to my dismay, I've ridden bicycles faster than this thing. Is there anywhere to get info on how fast it's supposed to be so I have a bench to work from?

P.S. Does anyone have a different sprocket yet? If so, how did it change the pverall performace?

how 'fat' are you?   I drove a se-r turbo for many a years and found the GS to be REALLY quick... car was in the mid 13's.... faster than a gs prolly... still thought the gs was quick.  I weigh 200lb...

i've been 115-120 EASY with +2 rear sprocket WITH my g/f (120lb) on the back.

how is the GS slow? I ride with a k1200rs and a duc s2r... and a zzr1200... I've put 4k-ish on my gs and outrun them all on any type of remotely twisty corner.... straight yeah they blow me away... but other than that gs>all... they all talk about how 'they shoulda started on something smaller'..... yeah...

also while im in davipu mode...

keep in mind... gs is cheap.  cheap to learn... im confident ill sell mine for more than i paid... so great.  learning more than EVERYONE else i ride with... now im considering an R1.....   mainly cause of all the highway miles i do.... so now im 10x faster on an R1 than if I started on an R1 (prolly be dead or hurt scared off a bike.....) so basically....

maybe ill gear my GS to be better for hwy... eithwy way.... first bike... ====== GS.  I ride w/ peeople that are riding MUCH bigger bikes and all wish they started on something smaller... hell... two want to BUY my gs to "learn" on........... take a lesson.

Where are you shifting?
Title: Slow, slow, slow, and slow.
Post by: fat_sac on July 28, 2005, 05:44:24 PM
I'm shifting all over to find where it stops pulling. I can't feel ANY power band though. I think there's a carb problem with it. I knew it would be slow (slow being a relative term b/c my last bike was a GSXR750), but I didn't believe it could be this slow. It started to losen up a little after riding it some, but I haven't had a chance to put any miles on it. It's been sitting for a few months.

...And Cheesy, I'm not one of those "I need a litre bike or nothing!" I've ridden them all and my fav is the gixxer 600.

If it's not well-maintained, it could well have a problem somewhere that's keeping the power down.  How old is it?  Clean the carbs, make sure it's jetted properly; depending on its age, replace the fuel lines... It should have power starting at 5Kish.  Not 2-stroke whoooooa power, but it'll start to scoot.

Admittedly, I'm not very large, but it's faster than almost every car out there, and quicker than a lot of bikes that would be faster if the owners knew how to use the rev range.

I'm 190 lbs and I was able to wring Mustang GT-ish acceleration out of the bike up to about 50 or 60 mph.  does that help?

Or it could be SPEED AND RELATIVITY THEORY (http://www.soundrider.com/archive/Barnyard-Banter/BYB-May01-how_fast_is_fast.htm)...

Probably a mechanical problem though...  The GS has enough power to pop a wheelie pretty easily and dust any "normal" car from a stop. :dunno:

ROFLMAO!!! I'm only 165 lbs dude. It sounds like seriously though, I need to clean the carbs. I thought just for fun I'd rev it up and dump the clutch to ATTEMP a wheelie from a stop sign and it died. Yes folks, it died. I just got rid of the intermediate fuel chicken b/c it was giving us trouble and it runs better, but still no good. To do that though, I had to replace all the fuel lines. Now I have a 'T' right before the carbs and 2 lines running from the tank.

I just went all the way around with smaller signals and flush mounts for the rear, asa well as a fenderectomy. It's still not mine. It belongs to a friend who's entirely to busy to fix it so I'm doing all this to it to help him out. In exchange he's letting me ride it to school. I'm hoping after I clean the carbs it will be a lot of fun.

Here's the results of my newly refined lines:

I had that pair in my hand, just didn't know what they'd look like. I had the same ones I bought today on my gixxer and knew what I was buying. The ones you have look really good though.

Going to work today nobody passed me.
Going home I gave up at 95 mph per hour.  There were a few nuts in their
SUVS.  Probably retired cops that don't get tickets.
From a standing start no car pulls ahead of me.
I have had plenty of fun with middle aged guys in expensive sports cars.
The problem with them is, by the time they can afford them they don't have the balls to drive them.
Gotta shift.  The bike comes awake at 7,000 rpm.

:o that is a horrible thing to do to a triumph.
My bike is just fast enough....top speed by guage is 121.
60 in 3rd at 8000 rpm. what more does a girl need. 8)

This bike is not slow today I finally opened up the throttle and was amazed, everytime I shifted it pulled hard until the next shift. I also did two burnouts today because I didnt think it had enough power put it shure does.

You're talking about a GS here. As much as I love my bike, a gixxer it is not. Comparing the two is like comparing a miata to a porsche 911T. Yeah, the porsche is a MUCH faster, better handling car but that doesn't make the miata boring and useless.

I see you have an aftermarket exhaust. Make sure that the carbs have been rejetted. If the brass plugs covering the mixture screws are gone, then it has likely been rejetted. I'm not convinced that the sproket upgrade would be worth it, but there are people here who have done it.

Other than that, just keep in mind that it's a gs. It won't do wheelies without some effort and it will be smoked by a 600cc superbike with a competant rider. It's just a fun little bike to ride and a lot more forgiving of mistakes than bigger bikes.

The problem I found, is that it's only running on one cylinder. The reason I posted this thread is b/c I knew something HAD to be wrong with it. Not b/c I was baggin on the GS. I love the way it looks and think that with a little work, it will be a lot of fun. Tomorrow, I'm going to take it somewhere that has the tools to check the coils and see if it's maybe a pulg, coil, wire or something else that's wrong with it. I just got ahold of this thing, and have no idea what its capable of. Once I push it as far as it will go, then I'll rave and/or complain. Until then, thnx for those that have helped me.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. It just sounded a little like you were bashing the gs.

Yeah, running on one cylender sucks. Are you taking it somewere to pay someone to look at the bike? It might be cheaper to do some other testing. Does the non-running cylender have any spark? Plugs are cheap, so replacing them would be a good one. I think that the plug wires are long enough to swap them, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

Good luck with the wrenching. I hope it's something relatively simple.

against my deepest fears, I took the gs for a spin (2500), and I got up to 115mph going at 9000rpm exactly. no fuel starvation btw  :thumb:

Just say no...  Or wear full armored leathers so you stand a slim chance in a crash at those speeds.

Who the hell am I to preach?  I took the GS up to 85 (ind) the first time I'd ever ridden any bike on the freeway...   :o  Took it up to 100 (ind) wearing jeans and really thin gloves.   :?

But at least I corner like I'm driving Ms. Daisy.

I understand, these topics can be sensitive. Especially when you are on the net and can't see someone's demeanar (*sp)?  :P

I'm takingit to a friend that works at O'Rielly so I get the tools and sh%t for free. Although I think they do that anyway. I just don't have a test light here to test the coils. Can I just switch the wires? Is it that simple to test?

first time I ever took a motorcycle (the present one) on the freeway, I got really scared when I reached 60 and the wind started to hit me like a ragdoll, so I slowed down

im extra careful whenever I go above 90mph. I only do it in the same spot in the freeway I know (very smooth and straight road for some 20 miles) and at times when is pretty much empty (say, 2am to 4am).
Also, I don't stay above 90 more than ome 20/30 seconds. And yes, I wear mesh protection, full face helmet  and thick gloves (only missing real riding boots, but I use good quality regular boots).

And I turn very slowly... usually in second gear for any corner, and in 1st gear when its a corner I don't know.

Yeah...  It's kinda uncomfortable on a few different levels...  The wind isn't a factor when you tuck...  The RPMs are pretty high, but it's not loud compared to the wind....   But...   The thought of getting another damn speeding ticket usually keeps me under 80.

Which reminds me...  I got pulled over in my stupid SUV the other day...  39 in a 25. :thumb: DAMN IT!!!!  (No ticket though...  shhhh) The stupid SUV just makes me speed...  It's so heavy that gravity pulls it down hill too fast!

Now that I think harder about it, it won't work. The timing would be all f#$%ed up.

Sorry for the bad advice, its bedtime for me.

If its free and easy, go to O'Reilly (auto parts store or garage? not familiar with it)

Otherwise, you can take the plug out of the hole (with the wire still on it), make sure that the body of the plug is grounded and crank the engine a few times. You should be able to tell whether or not there is spark going on. That works better in a dark area, and you might want to disconnect the other plug to make sure that the engine doesn't start on you. It shouldn't start if you're just turning it over a few times but it wouldn't hurt.

Check out some of the stuff in this post.

Hell I do that on my way home every day on the NJ Turnpike in rush hour traffic.   There is a part that goes from route 3 to route 80 and has no enforcement.  They just finished the construction and re-paved route 80 going west from the George Washington bridge.  Smooth as silk.  No enforcement there since day one.

With the GS even a commute from hell like today can be fun.
