Title: 15T Sprocket, Much Gas Mileage Loss?
Post by: RVertigo on July 29, 2005, 05:23:46 PM
My GS is in the shop getting new sprockets and chain put on... They just called to tell me that the parts department pulled the wrong part (15T sprocket rather than a 16T) and that they don't have any other size sprockets (16T or 17T)...

My GS is my main transportation to work and my front sprocket is, "uh...  yeah... It's really bad" according to the shop.

A little over half my commute is freeway.  I cruise at about 70 (6,000 RPMs in 6th).  I actually think a 17T sprocket would be better... For better gas mileage...  :dunno:

I'm wondering if anyone has info on how much different the 15T is from the stock 16T.  Will I be running at 6,500 RPMs or higher at 70 MPH?  Does anyone know how much it affects gas mileage?

haven't see that big of drop in mpg.. the bike feels like its in 5 gear.. it puts it in the power range.  you dont really have to drop a gear the pass now, but i did the 15t gear when i piped and jetted it. if you want the best mpg i would stay 16t or go up one to 17t.

Just road it home...  Only about a 200-300 RMP change...  70 MPH (ind) is about 6300 instead of 6000 RPMs.  90 MPH (ind) is about 8400 RPMs.

Probably won't make more than a 1-2 MPG difference... :dunno:

Seems to have a little more pickup...  OR maybe that's 'cause my sprockets and chain are new...   :dunno:

no the 15t will definilty give u better acceleration but obviously u will lose some top mph, i noticed a big difference and may even consider going to a 14t

Yeah... I think I'm gonna stick with the 15T...  It's not that different on the freeway and makes trying to go 25 MPH a lot easier.
