Title: Picture Challenge
Post by: Mk1inCali on July 30, 2005, 02:02:04 AM
I challenge anyone besides Roadstergal to show picts from any other state that can produce consistently beautiful outdoor picts like the California sun can.

Kerry does very well with what he's got to work with, but the UT sun doesn't show very often, as evidenced by his picts.

Can we get some picts, of the bikes of course, that can hang with CA-based photo's?

the problem isn't that there aren't beautiful places everywhere, it's that for the most part most of us aren't photographers.....my wife is, but she doesn't take pics with the digi cam.....she uses the old school approach (35 mm).....

....maybe later today, I'll scan some of her renderings in....

You're from MN, right? Didn't you ever go up to the north shore of lake Superior? Some of the views off of the Superior Hiking Trail are absolutely beautiful. I don't have anything digital, but If I can remember, I'll scan some of my photos in.

Maybe I'l have more once I learn how to use my new digital camera. I haven't been able to get much out of it yet, but I can't tell if it is an issue with the camera or the user. Even if I do learn how to use it, I don't think it will take pictures as good as my 35mm SLR can. Apples to oranges, I suppose.

Here are some photos of my last ride I never got around to posting. The first two are a little underexposed, but that's operator error from using a PHD camera.

Goat, to answer your question, I am from MN, and I did go to Superior, up to Kakabeka Falls in CAN too, and while the scenery is really really good stuff, something about the picts I've seen since I moved here to CA...Almost like the contrast is turned up higher, but in a good way.

The last pict you posted of the farm has that quality to it.  Don't know how to describe it.

Mind you all, this is NOT a slag on anybody's photo taking skills, or trying to dump on other areas of the country, I just haven't seen that quality, whatever that is, from anywhere else, but like I said above, goat's last pict in his post on the first page is very very close to that.

I'll go and try to get some good pics on Tuesday.....I can't do anything tomorrow (daddy daycare).....so if it's not scalding out on Tues, I'll take the more scenic route in, and try and get some of our lovely rock formations (ie mountains) and perhaps a tree (ie cactus) and maybe a little landscape (ie brown dirt and sand).....man I miss greenery....

Because the site hosting the pictures (werbshots) doesn't like you linking to the pictures directly on other web sites.  Either put up a link to you album (I assume that's how Webshots work) or post hte photos somewhere like photobucket or imageshack.

Had the pleasure today to head out to Ludington MI today:

The first 30 minutes of the ride is on high-speed slab, and since my significant other isn't as keen on driving as she is being at the destination, I negotiated to haul the bike until we got to roads of character, then ride the 90 minutes to the destination.  So I loaded the bike and off we went:

We got there just after lunch, but we hadn't eaten yet, so we dropped by the House of Flavors. It's an old ice cream store turned restaurant.   Has an interesting menu, but the desserts are to die for.  Here's where they put them together:

and this is Strawberry Fields Forever:

(Tastes even better than it looks.)  Then, we were off to the beach -- the end of Michigan's US10.  One of the benefits of riding a bike is preferred parking:

(The Ludington harbor lighthouse is off in the distance.)  After a dip and a sun bath, we decided to walk the 1/4 mile out to the lighthouse:

A seagull (better known perhaps as a lakegull) has the best view:

Here's the shore looking north of Ludington.  A lot of sand dunes, beaches and the odd bit of green:

and the view looking south of Ludington.  More of the same.

On the way back to shore, we passed this summer resident:

We packed it up and with the Mrs. feeling relaxed I rode all the way back.  Had to switch to reserve at 70 mph, something I feel I should practice more often. Had 242 miles on 4.065 USGal, or 59 mpg for $10.  The minivan took almost three times that, but everyone had smiles on a good day spent in the Michigan summertime. :thumb:

Hey Redskin, hope you enjoyed my home town of Ludington/Scottville. I used to work at the House of Flavors when I was teenager, it has changed a lot since then. If you want a good ride try heading up from Ludington through Manistee, then follow the coastal road all the way up to Traverse City region. It is about 2 hours ride from Ludington. My uncles on their Harley's and I on my 500f did the trip in May up to Kalkaska, great roads, scenery and places to stop and eat.

Seth
