For my $9.95 a month I get not only an ISP but 100 MB of web space. I'm working on filling it up, but at the moment I've only used 9 MB.
So, if any of you would like to display an avatar next to your posts, but you don't have a place to host it, send me a copy of the image. I will:
1) Resize it if necessary
2) Upload it to my web space
3) Send you the URL to use in your GStwin.com profile.
Caveat: I'm a pretty conservative guy, so I reserve the right to NOT host anything crass, obscene, etc.
Cheers to Kerry.
Start working on your pics folks!
KUDOS to Kerry :thumb: !
I'm up to about 16 MB now, but that still leaves lots of room.
Anyone?
:)
Thanks very much Kerry,
a very generous offer that I will take you up on... I have sent you an email with the avatar attached!
Cheers!
Stay Safe :thumb:
Very generous offer. I'm making this a sticky.
Kerry's already hosting mine. He's the man!! I tell you no lie my friends.
John L.
So far I have 13 (hopefully) satisfied customers. (You know who you are.) Their avatars take up all of about 40KB total. That's less space than ONE of the umpteen dozen 640x480 pictures that I've posted for my How-To pages.
Don't be shy! Oh, and please make sure I know your GStwin.com username when you email me an image. That way I can rename your image file with your username, which helps me keep track of which images belong to who.
Kerry:
Buen trabajo. Good job. Mine is in his site too!!!!!!!
Merci
Gino
mine there too!

You rule dude!!!!!!

Yes, just click on the email icon below any of my posts and attach the image to your message. Again, make sure that I can tell what your GStwin username is....
kerry, aren't you hosting mine too????
<------------- as you can see its not there??????
jut curious
Oops! "My bad", chevysolid.
I recently "cleaned things up" in my webspace. I was so sure that I had gotten all of the "live" avatars renamed to the appropriate GStwin.com usernames that I must have deleted your osu-logo-top-left.gif image.
Can you give me the link to the original image again? I'll let you know when I have it posted to my webspace. It will be renamed to chevysolid.gif so this doesn't happen again. (I'll send you the full URL.)
yeah thanks from me too kerry. you are also hosting MI themed avatar.
question kerry, this avatar is that the pic/graphic under the username?, and what size do you need it resized to., and is there a charge? thanks  :thumb:
Yes, the avatar image is the one next to each of your posts. Just attach the original image to an email and send it to my Juno account. (Hover over the email icon below this post and read my email address in the status bar of your browser.) I will convert/resize the image if necessary and reply with the URL that you can use on your GStwin.com profile page.
No, there is no charge for hosting GStwin.com avatar images in my webspace. I'm glad to do it!
 cool thanks a bunch. ....just gotta find hte right image now :)
Thanks a million,
Another satisfied customer
Thanks
I'll be GONE from 14 Aug to 25 Aug, so I won't be able to prcoess/post any new Avatar images during that time. In fact, it may be a day or two after I get back before I can get caught up with everything.
I'm back! (I actually got back on Saturday the 23rd.) I've been slowly catching up with all of the posts since I left on my 10-day trip. So far I'm all the way up to Tuesday the 19th.
I found 1 Avatar submission waiting for me when I (finally) checked my email. If anyone else has been waiting to submit an Avatar image, I'm "open for business" again.
PS - Thanks for the GStwin.com stickers, John! They were in the stack of snail mail that my wife collected for me while I was gone.
Kerry, I sent you something but since then have found another way to host...thanks to Good_guy. Dont worry about mine...thanks anyway.
kerry how do you do this again?
Quote from: 96gskerry how do you do this again?
It's easy!
1) Select a digital image (photo, logo, etc.) This can be a picture you took with a digital camera, something you scanned, or something you found on the Internet. [Caveat: See the very first post in this thread, regarding my conservative  nature.]
2) Write me an email, and attach the image. Or include the URL if the image is already somewhere on the 'Net. Be
sure to tell me your
GStwin.com username. You can find my email address by hovering over the email icon below this message, and looking at the status bar of your browser.
3) I will resize the image if necessary (down to the max 100 pixels in either direction), copy the final image to my webspace, and send you a return email with the URL of the image.
4) Go to your
GStwin.com profile page, scroll to the bottom, and copy the URL into the space provided for your Avatar location.
5) Enjoy!
thanks Kerry! now everyone can see the BEFORE picture. one day i'll have to post the AFTER one. hmmm...more dificulties.
and yes people, the rear shock is blown in this picture
So far I'm only hosting avatars for 33 members, and they're only taking up 122 KB of space. I've still got almost 60 MB of web space left....
Only one of those members has 2 avatar images that they can switch between. I'm open to hosting multiple images for anyone who's interested.
I have been emailing it to people but this may be better. How do I send it.
Thanks.
Srinath.
Click on my email icon (below), or hover over it to see my email address in your browser status bar.
Just attach one (or more) image files. JPEG, BMP, GIF, whatever. I'll post them and reply with the URL(s) that you need to specify at the bottom of your GStwin.com profile.
If you already have an image somewhere out on the Web, you can also just send me the URL. As long as I can get to it without signing up for a membership....
Thanks Kerry, this is what I've been waiting for, I'll be sending you my pic as soon as I can get it...
Kerry is the man!!
Thanks again for the work on my avatar!
You still have a little of that 100MB left?
If possible, I was wanting to see if you'd host the picture of my bike in the Wall of Fame. Here's the link:
http://www.gstwin.com/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=member_bikes&id=afz
The picture is not centered very well, if it's not too much trouble do you think you may be able to cut out some of the grass?
Oh, I know you said you were a pretty conservative guy.. You don't think you'd have a problem post such as bad a$$ bike?
Not to step on Kerry's toes whilst making such a generous offer, but should his webspace be exceeded, I could also provide urls from images emailed to me. Figure if I'm paying for the space I might as well use it... also I've no restraints on "crass" images as long as the site itself does not object... again no toe stepping intended.
pm me or email @ kolpaz@optonline.net
No offense taken. It's always good to have extra options!
I do have plans for using more of my webspace, but currently I'm only using about 49MB out of 100, and the 49 avatar images I'm hosting only take up a measly 207 KB.
Happy avatar "publishing"!
WoW cool.....Thanks Kerry  ! its good to have a picture now instead of a small red cross!! Its also great to have a couple of different pics to switch between! I was going to send you some other pictures but maybe they are a little too erm.....dodgey :? !! ...Thanks again!!!
hey kerry sent you an email with my avatar was wondering if you would host it for me i appreciate it andy
Oops!
Sorry Andy, I guess I haven't checked my email for a couple days. I sent you a PM....
Thanks Kerry :)
thanks kerry :thumb:
word up kerry !
thanks a bunch for hosting my avatar. it looks good. rock on 8)
Hi Kerry! I sent you an e-mail with my stupid pic... I would be able to host it myself, but my thumbnails on my host site are 104x104 pixels... (8 lousy pixels...grrr!!!) anyway... thanks for helping me out... i kept ;wondering why my images became red x's after a few hours
well.... i got a reply back from MAILER DAEMON.. Kerry, did you change your e-mail?
Kerry is very good about returning PM's. Try that route. He's often on most nights so he'll reply soon enough.
Quote from: cummuterguyKerry, did you change your e-mail?
No, no change of address. In fact, I received emails from 2 other GStwin members in my Juno mailbox today.
Try again?
Thanks Kerry,
I entered it in my profiles so we'll see what happens...
Trish
I'd be inclined to say that it's still not working
:dunno:
Ya, I think you are right. I give up
Thanks Kerry!! working fine now!!
:) Thanks Kerry , Man...
You ARE the best! Wish you weren't so far away, I owe you one

She works! Many thanks Kerry, you da man :thumb:
Once again, Thanks Kerry! Now I look like the Evil Clown Biker Gang leader from Akira
is anyone *cough*Kerry*cough* interested in an automated avatar hosting script?
you give it a jpeg from your harddrive and it resizes it for you, stores it on the webserver, and gives out the URL.
it runs on any server that has PHP w/ GD support.
Quote from: crashis anyone *cough*Kerry*cough* interested in an automated avatar hosting script?
Hmmm ... maybe. But I'm not THAT big of an operation yet.
For now I don't mind doing things manually. Besides, a significant number of the avatar images I'm hosting have benefitted from some combination of cropping, lightening, addition of a border, etc.
Thanks for thinking of me though! :)
ATTENTION!If I am hosting your avatar (or other files) ...
LISTEN UP!I recently completed the changeover from my old web host (sisna.com) to my new one (EACHosting.com). It took me a week to get everything copied over, and another 2 or 3 weeks to go through all of my GStwin posts and update the links. All of that is DONE now, so
the only thing left to do before I pull the plug on my Sisna account is to get YOU to update any of your links to my webspace.
FOR AVATARS1) In your web browser, determine the current location of your avatar image. (In IE you do this by right-clicking on the image and choosing Properties from the popup menu.)
2) If the Address (URL) includes
users.sisna.com/KerryKJB1 then it is pointing at my soon-to-be obsolete webspace.
3) Copy down the URL (or Ctrl-C it to the clipboard).
4) Go to your GStwin profile by clicking the "Edit Profile" link at the top of this page.
5) Scroll to the bottom of your profile page ... find the "Link to off-site Atavar:" text box.
6) Enter the URL for your avatar, but replace
users.sisna.com/KerryKJB1 with
www.bbburma.net7) Click the
Submit button
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
8 ) In a couple weeks I will make a pass through the list of users whose avatars I am hosting, and send PMs to those who have not changed their avatar URL. (
Please don't wait - save me some time & effort!)[/list:u]
FOR OTHER FILESI'm not hosting very many other files for people. (You should know who you are.) The same address change described above applies. If you have trouble, let me know.
FOR LINKS IN GSTWIN POSTSIf any of your posts include images from my OLD webspace, those images will soon turn into little red X's (when my Sisna account goes offline). URL-type links will be broken, but this won't be obvious until they are hovered over or clicked on.
I'm sure that I missed a few links as I went through my 2000+ posts, so we're in this together. The solution is for us to let each other know about broken links, and for the original poster to update the URL in their message. (In case of emergency, I
think that as moderator I can edit posts in the
General Discussion forum, but I'm not sure.)
------------------------------------------------------------
Why would I go through such "pain and suffering" on purpose?
A) My new webhost gives me 3 times the webspace, much more flexibility and control, and faster downloads! Obviously, these benefits are shared by most of YOU as well.
B) This change ($40/year) will save me $80 a year over my previous arrangement ($10 / month)!
C) Of the $40 annual fee, $10 goes to support GStwin.com! :thumb: [/list:u]If you're interested in starting up a web presence, consider taking advantage of the generous webhosting offer made by GStwin member
1998_GS500 in the GSTwin.com Member Webhosting (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9418) thread.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Changed the color-coding for better readability.
This is pretty awesome of you Kerry, I was just thinking of a way to host a picture to use as an Avatar. I found a certain picture I'd like to use but only if I can change my user name to match it. Is there anyway to change my user name?
Actually on second thought, can we use GIF's (the ones that are animated) in avatars?
Quote from: proudlomI found a certain picture I'd like to use but only if I can change my user name to match it. Is there anyway to change my user name?
Sorry, not that I know of. That's a question for John.... :dunno:
Quote from: proudlomActually on second thought, can we use GIF's (the ones that are animated) in avatars?
Yep, as long as the file size isn't too huge. (Someone once asked me to host a 1MB .GIF-format avatar for them! :o And I only had 100MB of total space at the time.)
The JPG avatars that I'm hosting take up an average of 4.5 KB each. The average animated GIF (there are 4 of them) is 28 KB.
The hard part is to find an animated GIF that does not exceed the GStwin 100x100 pixel display size limit. I successfully "shrank" one for somebody once upon a time, but it was painful with the demoware I used. John the admin (and other graphic geeks) probably have -- and know how to use -- software that will crunch an animation down with a few clicks. Anwyay, keep that in mind when selecting an animated GIF for your avatar.

Did it work? Did it work? Did it work?

<------------
Woohoo!! It worked!!
Even I can follow Kerry's directions! That means they gotta be good!
Thanks Kerry!
After trying to decide which of several cool or funny pictures to use, I just turned on my webcam, took a snapshot and that was that.
Thanks a lot Kerry!
Cheers.

... BUMP ...
One Week Warning
If I started hosting your avatar or other file(s) more than 5 weeks ago, please read this post (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=90230#90230) from the previous page in this thread.
Boy, do _I_ ever feel foolish....
For some reason I started checking the avatars on the first page of this thread. Every single image hosted by me still had the old Sisna URL. Grrrr! :x
On a whim I checked the properties on my own avatar and ... yep, you guessed it.
This made me think of a Christmas play that we did in class in the 4th grade. I read the main character - a college student living at home, studying to be an "efficiency expert". He had pushed everyone in the house into buying their presents months early, wrapping them, and stashing them well in advance of the holiday. As the play goes on, one family member finds that mice have shredded their gift wrapping (in the attic). Another can't remember where they hid their presents (they eventually find them -- accidentally -- behind the encyclopedia set). And so forth.
At some point "our hero" realizes to his horror that he never even BOUGHT presents. Trying to keep his secret he dashes out, on Christmas Eve of course, and ... you get the idea. It all comes crashing down.
Sigh.
har har har har... cool cool cool... thnx kerry
yay, i have an avatar now, thanks kerry!!

Are you saying that it only costs you $9.95 a month to host this site? How much more would it cost you for us to be able to upload pictures? If it might mean having to have a bigger hard drive on your server I can see what I can scavange from around my office. We are always buying new computers because I work in the graphics industry and the files we work with are absolutely enormous. The computers we upgrade from are too slow for doing what we do but would be sufficient for running a server.
Dom,
I don't host the GStwin site - that belongs to John the Benevolent Administrator. :)
I opened a personal ISP account with Sisna early last year so I could post pictures of my trips and other interesting stuff. It occurred to me that I could spare some space for avatar images, for those GStwin members who didn't have their own webspace to use. That account cost me $119.40 / year, only gave me 100MB of space, and was a little on the slow side when FTPing files up and down.
I have since switched to a MUCH better service, offered by EACHosting through our own 1998_GS500. (See the GSTwin.com Member Webhosting (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9418) thread.) It costs me $40 per year ($10 of which go directly to GStwin to help with upkeep costs), gives me 300MB of space, and is more peppy on file transfers. Gotta love it!
I don't really have the space to allow for wide-open uploads, nor do I have the inclination. While I would trust most GStwin users to be discrete about what they uploaded, just one bad image would ruin the whole thing.
Anyway, I appreciate the hardware offer even if I can't really take advantage of it. Thanks! :thumb:
