Title: You Guys Are Killing Me
Post by: CGRESCUE on August 02, 2005, 11:22:21 AM
So there I was, enjoying my nice relaxing Coast Guard job in Maine. My GS500F sitting in the garage waiting for spring when the assignment officer calls up and says "congrats, you are getting promoted." "Ok......... why are you calling me Mr. Assignment Officer." " Well, you just promoted yourself out of your own job. I have a job for you, we want you to go the Middle East and play Coast Guardsman over there. " My response, "in the desert?" Its been 3 months over here now and I read this forum every day to help pass the time. It wasn't bad till about the 1st of June, then it seems everyone is out riding around, taking pictures, overall making me jealous. To top it all my kid brother on leave from the Army(Iraq) decides to go into my garage and take pictures of the bike, the Jeep, all the toys that I left for a year, all with a beer in one hand and a middle finger in the other.  My last shred of dignity was taken away when I was assigned a vehicle here. You would think that a Humvee, perhaps a big truck would be in order. They gave me a Dodge Neon!  So, since the damage is done, you all may as well keep posting pictures of your summer rides, perhaps some destination info. All I know is when I get my 2 weeks off back in Michigan I am going to ride my bike as much as humanly possible!! Thanks to all of you for your pics, technical advice and mod ideas you posted for others, it has given me list of things to do when I get home!

Seth

And by the way in case anyone is curious, the U.S. Coast Guard is nothing like Baywatch!!!  8)

The job isn't bad, its just the down time that gets old. I am scheduled for Oct 1st to be back in MI, but counting on that would be a mistake. So I'll see what happens. At this point, if December rolls around and the roads are clear...... it's go time. Of course I saw this now after being acclimated to 130 degree heat. Put me in 50 degrees and I probably will spend my time at home with my head stuck in an oven trying to stay warm. Have fun!

Dont knock da Neon brother, stuff that can be done with those cars is pretty damn neat and dont require your first male born to do it.  Does it atleast have AC?

No reason not to ride in the winter!  If you can learn to handle 130, you can learn to handle 30.  Winter in Toronto can't be any better, and with the right gear (read : heated gloves or grips, vest, and lots of layers), you'll be alright.

Good luck  :thumb:

With bolt-ons my 98 Neon runs in the 14's in the 1/4 mile.  89,000 miles on the stock engine, transmission, clutch and axles.  I have time slips for at least 80 passes at National Trail Raceway here in Ohio over the last 3 years.

Only thing that has ever broke or gave me trouble is the drivers side axle seal....   $50( parts and labor! ) at the dealership to get it fixed.

The Neon does have A/C, but it takes it running for 20 minutes to actually cool the car down. I have one of those cooking temp gauges in the back seat, the other day at about 2 PM it read 180 F. As for the brother, he'll get his, his brand new jeep wrangler is parked right next to mine, I'll think of something for payback. Any suggestions? I rode my gs in Maine up till mid-December this past winter, had to take my road test. I bundled up nice and good and put on my expensive insulated gloves on top of my riding gloves and it was actually warm with the exception of air rushing past my boot leg and jeans, in between the thermal underwear. Snowhwnd, MDI is where I should be getting assigned to next, specifically Southwest Harbor. The job is open next summer, and we get first picks over here. I spent 7 years in Jonesport, I would prefer to stay away from that place.  I rode in Bangor all last summer, never saw another gs.

Well when you get back you should see mine... should have it tomorrow!!  :)  We'll have to have a GS riding party when you get back!!!  I've seen a couple around this year... a yellow '04 I almost bought from a guy, then I found an older 500E for less money from a guy in Millinocket... I'm just learning to ride, so I didn't want anything too nice and fancy.
It's 82 and sunny today, try to stay cool over there!  8)

you could always post an ad for free on //www.craigslist.org with a pic of a jeep and your bro's phone number and price the jeep a couple thousand below blue book... but make it believeable... his phone will ring off the hook for days...   Make sure you choose the city closest to him on the right side of the site.

Thank you for your service to our country.

Anyone else ever put a zip tie around the front axle of a front wheel drive car?

Make it long enough to smack something each time it goes around..

It doesn't do any damage, but it will sure make someone think their losing their transmission or CV joints..

I like that craigslist idea. He only has a few days left before he heads back though. A subscription to a ghey newsletter might be in order though, after all they say every soldier likes reading material from the states. I'll try to post a few pictures in the next few days to show everyone what its like over here. I just got off of security duties today and I have to dry my boots, I think I have puddles of sweat in them!! On a plus side though the farmers tan is coming along nicely. Also thanks for all the patriotism from you guys.
