Title: Had the shop install the Wileyco (pics)
Post by: Phaedrus on August 05, 2005, 04:29:04 PM
Yup, I wussed out and took my bike to a local shop to have them install the Wileyco    However, they did do a really good job, much better that I could have done with my limited knowledge and limited tools. I also made a good connection with a local shop if I ever need something else done that is over my head, And they are less than a mile from me  :thumb:

Anyway, here are some pics of how it turned out. They did the cutting, welded it on there, made me a spacer bracket, welded the centerstand bracket back on, etc.

From a distance:

Up closer:

The spacer bracket:

The center stand bracket:

..and Srinath's flange.  Before I had it installed I painted it with 1200 degree ceramic black paint. Atleast I did THAT part myself.

Special thanks to Srinath and being a heck of a good guy and helping me get the flange. You're a good man, I don't care what Pandy says about you    J/K.

The sound is AMAZING. I am SO HAPPY WITH IT. It sounds better than I could have imagined it to, it sounds more like a "real bike". Very impressive. It has even turned a few heads so far and some of my friends that are into bikes heard it before and after and were like  :o  and I was all like  8)

Good stuff!!

Its pointed out too much ... and the space was sorta not needed ... I bolted it on the carrier ... That spacer may be making it point out to the side too much ...
Cool.
Srinath.

I was wondering that Srinath. Why do you think they made that bracket? I noticed no one else has the bracket. I don't mind being different, and I like it the way it is, but I can't really understand the logic of it being there either?  :dunno:

The hanger the wileyco comes with will need a little twisting muscling into position ... They may not have realised that ... I'd clamp them in place and leave the bolts a shade loose, And tug/shove everyhting into place and then cinch down the flange bolts ... shove some more and then tighten the clamp. They may have sorta shot themselves in the foot by welding it on wihtout fitting it ... Yea most likely ... My guess. So now the can is off ... they are used to working under cars ... where their work never gets seen ... so they dont have the whole idea of pleasing to the eye in mind. But the centerstand bracket is good idea though ...
Cool.

Well, you will REALLY want one after you hear it  :thumb:

Quote from: ginoepsst...where to get a wileyco exhaust can for the flange i'm getting from you?

I got it from DK-TRADER on eBay as a Scratch N' Dent special. It was $50 plus shipping.

Quote from: cheesyi can scrape the muffler on the ground without that crazy bracket, I'm suprised you're not scraping on the garage floor.....

Um, ok? Maybe you are heavier?    Seriously, the centerstand bracket isn't any closer to the ground that the stock configuration is it? It is not a new bracket; they just took it off and re-welded it back on. It is the same one. As for the other spacer bracket thing, that is no where near the ground..it is about 3" outwards. So I guess I am not sure I know what you are saying.

Quote from: seshadri_srinath... they are used to working under cars ...But the centerstand bracket is good idea though ...

Actually they are an all bike shop. They do custom fabrication, welding, bike repairs, parts, and even build their custom bikes. However, they are evidently chopper/harley guys from what they said and the other bikes in their shop and the others outside. They probably don't know a Wileyco from a Wiley Coyote    but I think for the most part they did a good job. Kinda weird....but good.

By the way, I made a video clip that has sound if anyone cares about hearing it. I don't know of anywhere to host it? Photobucket doesn't host videos to my knowledge, and it is like 2.25mbs, it has a couple revs. It isn't that great, but for those who haven't heard one it might be cool. I know Chris/Weazelnoze has some sound-only clips that are smaller, if you search "wileyco sound clips" you'll find that also. His sound great and are smaller file sizes.

I finally got a second to look at the pics... and damn, you're right.  I know you're feeling good about it right now, Phaedrus, but that's a hack job.  I'd take it back and demand that they redo it with a) the end of the exhaust pointing down, like it should, and b) it not sticking way out from the bike like that.  That's a really unprofessional job they did, IMO.

All I can think is that being folk who do choppers, they thought the most important thing was to have the logo maximally visible...

Yeah, I disagree with it being a "hack job" also. They did take a lot of care to cut everything perfect, did a great weld, did a great job with the center stand bracket, etc. The spacer bracket, I admit, is a bit of an odd ball thing. But just because it is an odd ball piece of hardware, doesn't make it a "hack job". I actually think they tried TOO HARD, and made it more complicated than it had to be.

They coulda just cut the pipe, stuck the flange on it with the palm of their hand, and zip tied a piece of tire for the center stand. Would that make it a hack job?

substitute "hit flange with plastic mallet" for "with the palm of their hand", "tennis ball" for "piece of tire", and you would have a PERFECT setup.

No, that would have been a rat job. :P  I still think it was not well done on their part.  I have a friend who has a welding apparatus; the actual welding is a matter of having the equipment and having a little practice on it.  A shop job should take things like proper positioning into consideration before they went ahead and welded.  As Srinath has posted before, there's a reason for the tip to point down.  And the 'spacer' looks like pieces they'd have around (Hey, Merv, this doesn't fit...).  But, if you like it, that's cool.

I do give them points for relocating the centerstand bump stop.

Edit: I apologize if it comes across as raining on your parade, which is not what I'm trying to do.  But it irks me to see people making good money by doing things all quickie-like.

Yeah, I get something done that I like and I am happy with, and all anyone does is talk crap about it.   That will teach me to post anything else about my bike. That is the thing though, when you post something, you gotta expect criticism from the peanut gallery. I'll know next time to just keep quiet and enjoy my bike :)

i am considering doing EXACTLY your setup  :thumb:

i can just imagine a comatose cager doing something unsafe and nearly killing me. i can pull up to them at the next light, wave nicely & say hi to get them to open up the window...

...then aim the exhaust at them and goose the throttle just before i take off...

eat my dust :nana:

Thanks Ginoe, I laughed when you said about pulling up next to a car and goosing it. Haha. That would work well  :thumb:  The only forsee-able problem with the outlet not being completely down would be in the event of rain getting in there. But even then, it is at an angle, not totally upwards. The few centimeters of lip might make a slight difference.  :dunno:

I followed Ginoe's suggestion and put it on putfile.com. This is a new one, not a revving one like I emailed to some people. This is me on my GS500F riding down a street. It's under 30mph but it sounds pretty good still  :thumb:

I totaly disagree with the naysayers.  Take a look at the exaust angle.  It follows the body lines better than most of the Wileyco installs I've seen, and if you look at pic 2, the exhause looks like it would have hit the passanger footrest bracket if not for the spacer.  Also, the Passenger footrest looks like it would hit it when it was down if it were closer.

I LIKE IT.  I think it follows the lines better.  I don't minde the creative spacer.

Oh, and as for the outlet facing the wrong way...why couldn't he just remove the endcap and turn it down?

Don't listen to all these people that don't like it...it's only important if you like it.  And if it helps, you've got my vote  :thumb:

hey rich the bike sounds great!  now we can tear it up on our next ride!  thoughts... would rotating the can inward by one bolt make it line up better?  the sticker can always be removed and glued in a different position.  was that the original position of the sticker from the factory?
