I have done quite a few searches but I can't figure out where I would have to drill. I can't find any pictures that show that clearly. I'm not sure if older GS's (mine's a 2004 gs500f) have the same exhaust as the newer ones (the very tip that is about 2 inches in diameter and is parallel with the ground) if that makes any difference. How is it done?
drill holes in the area in between the inner circle (exhaust outlet of your can) and the outer circle. I used a 3/8" bit and started with four holes eventually ending up with six.
When I cut the can off to put on a supertrapp, I was shocked to find that the stock exhaust only flows through two 5/16" sized holes. Maybe I missed something cause' I don't see how that's possible.
Check out this link:

It shows a color diagram of where to drill and some information about doing it. Will it sound good? :dunno: I hope so! :thumb:
Don't do it - I did it and it sounds LAME, not too mention you immediately lose some power and run leaner than the alrerady lean stock jetting. At least see if you can get a wileyco with a restrictor flange first. I hated it and rejetted/ exhaust quickly. $.02
I did this mod, but I drilled the hell out of it. I first did four holes, and it sounded weak, so I did six holes...better. Then I widened the diameter of the six holes...better. Then I drilled holes between the holes...better. then I used a file and completely removed the material between the holes. Man, I love the sound, but it is much louder than stock, but not Harley loud. To some it may be irritating, but it definitely makes you more noticeable, and on a bike that can only be a good thing.
As far as performance changes. I've noticed none. I still have stock jetting and air filter, and I've had no problems whatsoever. I have a neighbor that owns a Harley Sportster, and he actually likes the sound of my exhaust.
Oh, and a wileyco with restrictor flange is going to be over $100 right? Any other systems will be more, and will require a rejet. Mine was FREE!

bump...I added a picture to the above post
I did it on my rejetted (richer, to what Pablo's site says for stock bikes) Y2K edition GS, and drilling just 3 holes did the trick for me, a little better sound and I am pretty sure it opened up the high parts of the rev range.
I like it better now...YMMV.
Anyone got sound clips of their exhaust after they drilled holes? I think it would be cool to have a thread where different exhaust configs can be compared. :thumb:
I can make a video of mine with audio if someone wants to host it.
If you keep the vid. real short, and low res. I will host it for a bit :thumb: I am very interested in how it sounds :)
Just e-mail it to me
I just drilled my exhaust yesterday only did 2 holes to start with very pleased with the sound! Much better than stock. I think i might try one more tomorrow!
In the link that Phaedrus posted - scroll to the bottom. There are sound files posted there.
Yeah, I see it now. And...

Ok, that long @ss address is to a video of my bike hosted by google...you have to download their veiwer, but I didn't have anyone else to host it.
