Got it yesterday - was on it all day - love it. Just a couple of things though:
- It usually takes me 30mins to get home from the bike shop. On the way back (after I got the bike) it started jumping like it was out of petrol - but it wasn't as I could hear it all and I could see it at the top of the tank when I opened it and I was thinking :dunno: . Now, the switch (or whatever you want to call it) was at "ON" (on the side of the chassis - sort of just behind your left leg) - When I switched it to "PRI" (which I assume is primary tank) it was fine and I got a whole day's worth of riding out of it...so I don't know -it is going back to the shop either today or tomorrow - unless you guys have some info that could help? Incidently, is it normal for the PRIMARY tank (excl. RES) to run out after this:-
-45mins ride home through towns mostly, 1 or 2 country roads and didn't go over about 40mph - left it for about 4 hours at home...this was done on my own
-just over 2 hours of starting and stopping (30min intervals really) - with about 1 hour rest between intervals...these hours were done with me and my mate (both of us about 100kgs and about 6ft) going failry fast - nearly 90mph at some points - these hours were done going through country roads only.
Apart from the above, I love this bike - people say it has no power, but it has plenty for me and I am very impressed!!! 8) :thumb:
congrats on the new bike.
I too have a GS500F.
The fuel valve is like this...
PRI is for priming the fuel system...meaning you have to get fuel to the carbs; you have just refueled after having a completly empty tank. This setting will allow fuel to flow freely to the carbs, running or not.
on... lets fuel flow only when the engine is running.
REV...is reserve, when you need to get to the gas station soon. (about 1.1 gallons)
I get about 200 miles on a tank of gas. Plus about 40 on res.
ok, thanks - does this mean that I am better putting the valve on the ON position rather than the PRI position or does it not really matter? Sorry, motorcycle newbie at work here, lol :dunno:
"ON" should be what you normally have it set on.
If on 'PRI (PRIME, basically for some abnormal startup)", when you run out of gas you run out of gas, and I not 100% sure but I think the bike can flood out if left on "PRI" while not running.
"ON" = normal usage. "PRI" and "RES" = abnormal usage.
If the bike is going down the street on "ON" and it runs low on gas and starts to spit and sputter then you switch it to "RES" and have a bit to make it to a gas station. If the bike was allready on "PRI" or "RES" when it starts to spit and sputter you are SOL. Time to get use to pushing your bike to the next station.
Congrats on the new bike!!
You don't say what year it is, but is it possible you have the fuel starvation issue? If you do a search on fuel starvation, you'll get a lot of hits.
Mine's a '92, and if I'm taking long treks or commuting, I run him in PRIme. I'm all-too-familiar with the fuel starvation issue. For tooling around town, I keep him in the On position. Be sure to put your bike back to On if you run her/him on PRIme when s/he's parked.
Ride safely!!
pandy
Yea dont leave it on prime because I did that and when I woke up all my fuel had leaked out.
ahh, that will explain why I smelt petrol this morning in the garage, lol  - went to the gas station and filled her up and put the thing on ON again and it has been fine all day. :thumb:
It is a brand new '05 model and I am determined that i am going to keep her as shiny and bright as she is now
When she goes "sputter, cough," just reach down, and put her in PRIme. If *I* can learn to do it at speed, YOU can, too! ;) :thumb:
pandy
lol, OK - cheers
