Just wanted to post a quick message. Today we responded to a motorcycle accident. The rider took a curve in the country road at approx 70-85 mph, and did not complete his turn, and left the roadway. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle, and was unconscious for 2 minutes according to the witnesses who were riding with him. Needless to say he was smart enough to wear a helmet, gloves, and a jacket. The entire front of the motorcycle was broken off, and it looked as thought the forks were bent. He was life flighted to a hospital in Dallas. As far as we know, no major injuries, possibly a broken pelvis. His helmet had several large gouges in it and the riding gear was scuffed up.
Please, Please, everyone ride with your gear, and especially your helmet. This person's helmet undoubtedly saved his head from having chunks missing.

Yes, There have been 3 deaths in my area over the past month. ALL were wearing no helmet. They were all cruiser riders. Why do they seem to wear helmets less than sport/street bike riders? Silly

Sad that this happens. The ABATE folks here in Michigan are very pro-choice, and they would overwhelmingly choose to not to wear helmets if they could. Alas, it's merely a matter of time, I predict.
I occasionally get a kick out of visiting the
MichiganVotes.org web site to read the postings on the topic. A recent visitor referenced a Pittsburg Tribune-Review article entitled,
"PA Drops Helmet Requirement, and Motorcycle Deaths Drop, Too". Guess the jury is still out on the 2005 stats -- beats me if 14 fewer deaths in one year is statistically significant. Suspect not.

Hey vfrocket... There are a few roads I've been wanting to take really fast... But they're out in the middle of nowhere and I'd like to have an EMT follow me around in case I crash.
Will you follow me around wherever I ride if I promise to always wear gear?

I used to be the same, sometimes riding in jeans, but after I was hit not one block from work on a snack run... I never ride in less than full gear, head to toe.
The ABATE people are full of shaZam!!!! And if I had seen that article in the Trib I would have written a letter to the editor (the trib sucks by the way). The helmet law was repealed on Sept 4 of 2003. So here in SWPA that means they have approximately 9, maybe 10 months of data when you factor in the winter months. Also, alot of times they include ATV deaths as well as on road deaths. This topic and the other one on the florida law have got me thinking about this stuff again. I had done research on the helmet laws for a class last summer. Did I mention the Trib sucks

i say if you want to ride without a helmet, go for it... it's called natural selection. it's like people who choose to ride in a car without a seat belt. it's their decision, not mine.
personally, i always ride in full gear because accidents do happen as it did happen to me.
