Title: 2004 GS500F parts compatability, mods, etc...
Post by: Alphamazing on August 15, 2005, 07:37:42 AM
So, I just got my 2004 GS500F about a week ago, and I'm already planning mods to it (I fit right in with this board, don't I?). I used to have a '92 GS decked out with a full Vance & Hines Supersport exhaust, V&H ignition advancer, K&N filter, and a DynoJet jet kit.

So, when I wadded up the '92, the exhaust got sheared off. The engine remained intact due to some VERY nice engine guards put on by the previous owner. However, from what I've gathered reading old posts, the jet kit and ignition advancer won't fit the new bike. Am I correct in this deduction or did I misread?

Also, has anyone taken the fairing off the '04 models? I'm just wondering how well that worked out for anyone. I was looking to get a dualy headlight set up for it (like the Speed Triple) but the only aftermarket parts I could find for that were $300+. The Speed Triple and Speed Four also have MUCH bigger forks (47mm and 43mm respectively, compared to the GS's puny 37mm). I might be stuck with using a stock headlight from an old GS. Mounting and electrical should all be the same, yes?

These are intial mods only. We'll see what happens later.  ;)

I rode for a few hundred miles with the body fairings off. I left the headlight plastics on. It looked cool; kinda like an SV or TL I suppose. Naked looks good.

Naked is great, true, but the SV fairing ('03+) looks much better sculpted than the GS upper fairing (or the '99-'02 SV fairing, for that matter). The GS's fairing just looks tall and thin, kinda like someone punched it in the face.  I realize this is probably to provide wind protection for the upright riding position, but it still looks kinda pugish.

It kinda reminds me of a KTM 950 Adventure...

Oh come on, I'm sure someone can verify my assumptions. Will my jet kit and ignition advancer from the '92 model fit my '04 GSF?

no the advancer was changed in 04 supposedly, and the jet kit will only fit 89-00 bikes in 01 they went to a three jet design and then in 04 they changed the vacuum slides
