Title: Worried, hoping for the best for my pooch...
Post by: natedawg120 on August 16, 2005, 05:31:40 PM
Hey all,

Well during my dinner break my phone informed me I had a new voicemail.  When I checked it, it was the animal shelter that took in my dog saying they had an urgent problem with Otis, my dog.  They called at 11:00 shortly after they opened but i didn't get it till 6:30, half hour after they closed (I hate my phone).  Now I am worried thinking what happened or what has he done but they didn't say a thing besides that it is urgent that I call them.  I am just really worried and wanted to post somthing to get me through the night till I can call them as soon as they open tomorrow.  I am just scared that what i want for him isn't going to happen... :(

Little background: I had to give him up because the divorce I am going through and with my lack of money iI couldn't provide him the home or care he deserved.  As in a place with a yard or if he were to become ill a big vet bill.  I miss him A LOT and only want the best for him  :(

Sorry to hear it man.  I hope he'll be okay.  Is he, by chance, a pug?

nah, he is a german shepard red heeler mix.  I have a few pics but have to resize them but i will post some.  I am just afraid he has done something and they are going to tell me they are going to put him down.  Untill i find out i am going to be stressing.....not fun.

edit: Pics aren't on my server anymore i will have to load them back on later to post them ... No internet at home = pain in my butt

Awww...I'm so sorry...I hope everything's ok. I swear, I worry as much about my furry children as I do about my human children. :(

Well I heard what happened and talked to the people.  A person, not working with the shelter, was bitten by Otis.  It was a kid that stuck his hand in the kennel and got bit.  Never acted that way with me but i dunno.  I talked them into holding him 10days and trying again and every hour they are open and I am not at work i am going to go there and help then with Otis as much as I can.  Cause i don't want him to be put down, i just want him to have a good future, if not with me in a good home.

to the kid who probably provoked him in the kennel :guns:  :guns:

We have a youngster in our family that our 70-lb Pitbull is terrified of. Now, granted, our Pit is a big weenie, but we KNOW that child has done something to him. Needless to say, we watch our animals carefully when the little ones visit.

I hope you're able to work through this with your baby.

yeah Otis is the same way... Big wuzz, even loves cats.  I am going to do my best and hope it doesn't happen again (Make big signs that say no petting, Otis likes to be introduced first.)

Our Pit's best friend is our 2-month-old kitten. They're big dorks together!

The sign is an excellent idea. Or something like, "Please, before you pet me, let the staff introduce us."

I hope Otis is ok.  But little brats who stick their arms in cages either are probably to small to read, will do it anyway, or their parents don't have control of them!!!!!!!!

well it was a 10 yr old that got bit.  But your point is valid, i don't know many 10 yr olds who care what a sign says they are going to do it when the parents aren't looking.

still gonna try though

when i was a kid, the next door neighbor kid thought it was funny to fire a cap gun at our boston terrier.

this dog was terrified of thunder.  he'd run and hide when he heard a plane go over head.

so, anyway, this kid just keeps firing the cap gun and laughing while the dog starts growling.  eventually the dog bites his hand.  bites him pretty good too.  not major damage or anything, but more than a scratch.

so, after that, our dog was on some sort of probation from animal control for nine weeks to see if he had to be put down.

Did the kid ever mess with your dog again??

the kid was basically a good guy.  he was just being stupid.

i'm sure he played with the dog on many occasions after that, though it's so far back i really can't remember.

yeah that is the boat my pooch is in.  Oh but I had a female kitty (Noona) and a female dog (Daisy) that both had purple collars.  I like purple too, just never had a car or bike of that color.

<----- Talon wears a purple collar.

A dog will react when it feels threatened. Parents should be held responsible for their children's actions.

I hope Otis is ok.

he actually looks real happy.  I go by and see him as much as possible but working two jobs I work pretty much every day from 9 to midnight, so that makes it hard.  Otis' problem is that he knows when someone is timid and he reacts to it, that is why i introduce people to him.  I talked to him today and told him not to bite any more, like he can understand but if he can i try.  I just don't want to have him put down which is what will happen if he bites again.  I left today real upset, luckily i brought the GF with me so she could drive cause i new i would get that way.  Anyway i will keep updating and hopefully he finds the RIGHT people.

Awwwww...I hope he finds the right people, too. My doggie is a weenie, but he'll react, too, if he thinks people are timid. For some reason, he finds timid people to be a bit threatening (as though if they aren't exhuberant lil cusses like he is, then there's something WRONG with them).

Keep visiting him, and I hope hope hope that the perfect new mommy/daddy comes along to adopt him...  :thumb:

Once he knows you he is a good dog, very smart.  He is hyper and will greet you like a hyper dog and being that he is about 40lbs he isn't small.  He loves other dogs and he was raise with cats so he get along with them great.  He will chase them if they run, but if your cats are like mine when they have had enough, the claws come out and one swipe to the nose and Otis gets the hint.  I kept him primarily inside untill i had a fenced in yard, then i would leave him outside when i was at work.  Other than that the ony other thing that can be slightly annoying is that when he is excited, whether it be to see you or scared he can lose control of his bladder.  He has gotten A LOT better about this as he has gotten a little older so I fully think he will outgrow it in time.

All you have to do when you get home and let him out of the crate, he is smart enough to get in trouble if left inside alone (can open fridge), and tell him to go do the other and he will run right outside and do his buisness.

He just need to warm up to people, this I beleive has to do with the apt fire that took his Three kitty buddies, Carl, Lenny and Noona.  He missed them a lot and I think when the Firemen ripped them all out that tramatized him.

  , actually he was looking for the ham he saw me put in there.  He hates beer for some reason, most dogs i know like it.  In the event of a spill he runs over, laps up a little then curls his nose up and walks away.  Guess he is more for the liquor

I talked it over with my wife,  If you can get him from the shelter, and either bring him to cincinnati or meet us some where I would be more than happy to take him in.  I have 1/2 acre fenced yard,  2 cats, a lab mix , and 3 boys between 10 and 14 yrs old.  We all love dogs and would give him a good home

ktrim I can't help but feel relieved a little.  I am going to go to the shelter and see what I can arrange.  Once I have mad arrangements with them I will see when I can take a coupla days and bring him to you.  The soonest that I could do it would be sept 1 and 2, long drive from VA.  If the shelter says that they can not hold him till then, if you really will take him, I will find a way to get him up there cause I don't want anything bad to happen to him.

Oh and besides being hyper he also knows a lot of tricks.  To list them; Sit, lay down, shake, roll over, bang, up/dance, crawl/army man and maybe a few more that are slipping by me.  The hard part is getting him to do one when he is excited, he likes to mix a lot of them into one "I want the treat/ball/love" spasm.

Ok my forgetful self kept forgetting to get the pics on my thumb drive but FINALLY I have them up.  Here are some pics of Otis, the kitty that is in a few is Carl, he was taken by the apt fire.  The black dog was Daisy, she made I through the fire but for the same reasons I have to find [Found - YAY] Otis a new home, she got one too.  Enjoy!
