Title: Another attack
Post by: john on August 17, 2005, 02:07:10 PM
Well the board is being attacked again.  This time it's a bit different, but still causing the same problem.  I have added some protections that should help (I hope).  Most of the code/protection I added aren't going to be implemented till phpbb2.2 comes out.

Dunno who decided to try to take down the forum, but we'll try to keep it afloat.

I think the Motorcycle Dealer's Association is trying to take us out 'cause we are cutting into the sales of new RR bikes for beginners.

if you want a bit of my experience as a web developer... you could always migrate the dbase to a better forum. something along the lines of SMF.

imo phpbb is like iexplorer... a nice and easy target for exploits and attacks due to popularity and bugs.
smf is more like firefox. all the functionality but a more robust forum system.

 Maybe.  Anyhow, it may not be deliberate from any one user point of view.  It just may be a wormy thing.  The last sessions flood came from lockheed Martin.  Last time I checked we didn't piss them off   so I'm guessing this is like the santy worm in a sense.  Some malicious code executing on somebody's system trying to exploit any forum it can find through a google search.

I would hate to resort to that as I like phpbb, but you're right and if things persist I might have to do it.

i love phpbb too. the style and admin functions are great. but as you found out, is one of the most popular boards out there, and there are scripts designed to scan the web searching for exploits on the code of these forums to mess them up.

just like I mentioned, windows and internet explorer 'suffer' from the fate of their own popularity too.

hopefully these things stop soon.

for what is worth. I used to run a medium size board about multimedia with phpbb about a year ago. then random messages started to appear, then exploit that will fill the maximum amount of requests per second would render the board useless.
after 2 weeks I had enough and I had to take the forum down. too bad I acted a bit late, because when I tried to put another forum back up like a month later, I had lost most of my visitors and members.

I just checked out SMF and it looks interesting.  If problems persist, I may do it.
