it's #24 in this diagram (http://www.psndealer.com/fiche/images/SUZUKI/1997/Motorcycles/1609_15.gif) ... the 'clutch lifter mechanism' as clymer calls it. i was on my way to work this morning and the tab that holds the cable to the lifter mech. broke, so i had to ride the rest of the way to work clutchless. interesting to say the least. then at lunch today i cobbed the clutch cable back on to the lifter mechanism in order to make it home. note to self and others who care: stock tool kit does not have 8mm wrench capable of removing clutch cover bolts.
if anyone does happen to have a spare laying around i'll gladly take it off your hands

KJB: Replaced huge image with tiny link. Also changed it from the BikeBandit (http://www.bbburma.net/ScreenShots/BikeBandit_ClutchLifter.gif) diagram to a much cleaner MrCycles (http://www.bbburma.net/ScreenShots/MrCycles_ClutchLifter.gif) version.
If you click on any of the links above, and you get an unreadable diagram like this ...
... then hover over the diagram with your mouse until the icons appear as shown. Click on the orange square to see the FULL-SIZED image.
i might have another for the GS500, ill have to check. i know i have a few for the gs450 but dont know if they are the same. the sprocket offset is a little different between the 2 so one cover is more shallow than the other.
hey thanks kjb...and to think, i was proud i successfully posted a pic  blueknyt, if you do have an extra for the gs500 that you'd like to part with please let me know. bikebandit wants $38 plus shipping for it, but from what i can tell a used one would work just fine. it seems like one of those parts that should never break, but did :dunno:
