Title: Gas prices!!!
Post by: banner on August 17, 2005, 09:50:07 PM
What the heck is going on? This is getting beyond ridiculous.

I thought all this bloodshed in Iraq would actually end up with lower gas prices...it only ended up with certain people getting richer.

IMO, the cost of gas still doesn't accurately reflect the long-term cost of burning it environmentally.  Let it go up and drive some of the grocerygetter SUVs back to regular cars.

What pisses me off - if you tried to raise gas prices through taxes that went to alternative energy research, the people would scream bloody murder.  The oil companies jack it up over and over to line their own pockets, and people grumble and pay.

The way it was raised definately had some psychological research to back it. I remember inititally it just went up a bit and for a small amount of time. people were angry but it went down pretty quick. After a period of time...the same thing happened but for higher prices and longer. This cycle kept repeating till now..people are willing, albeit grudgingly, to pay 2.80 a gallon. Thats mind boggling pricewise.

I'm not sure how some people can afford it?

Also the deal with explorers and all that going out of style..the cost of buying a newer, more efficient car is much higher than just running the explorer.

It will take effect..but it takes a long time...definately nothing immediate. I'm definately glad i have the bike though, it really is a blessing.

What has that got to do with the price of tea in China?

Or gas in the US?   :P

I hope it goes up to UK prices.

The point is you don't have to drive very far to get some where.  They use less gas then.  Must I explain everything?  Lol.

I think we (as a nation) take it for granted and waste it (use very low-efficiency vehicles for tasks that a high- or even medium-efficiency vehicle would do perfectly).  I don't think the current cost of gas takes the cost of the environmental impact of burning so much into account.

heres where i might draw some flak, i do agree that a fuel efficient vehicle is the answer, or alt. fuel/hybrid, but as of yet, they are not very practical. sure for maybe 2 people, and 1 child, but suppose you have a large family, or run a business where a compact car will not work, what then?see civics or other compacts hybrids, for the most part are small, but if you must pick up supplies for your shop or whatever the case may be, small cars wont work (not safely anyway) what do you do then, that is the question i ask :thumb:

There is a spectrum of car size, from teeny to compact to moderate to bigger to big to wagon to pickup to SUV, and people, in general, don't just use what fits.  Most wagons, in fact, have more cargo area than most SUVs (the 5er touring, e.g., has more cargo space than the X5), but a lot of people automatically get lower-capacity, more-inefficient, harder-to-load SUVs when they have to haul something once in a while.  Or get one when all they have to haul is a gallon of milk and two kids, which could fit perfectly well in a more-efficient, better-for-the-roads, better-crash-rated midsize sedan.

Sure, you need an SUV or a pickup if you're towing.  That's what they're for.

Good on Honda for giving us the Element.  Holds a ton of crap, an eye to easy loading and driver visibility of the surroundings (which a lot of SUVs don't), and has car-spec efficiency and emissions.

One thing that really bugs me is that SUVs are exempt from many passenger-car emissions, efficiency, and safety standards - but they're being used as passenger cars.  The Fed gov is not going to grow some balls and do anything about that under this administration, though.

well, what it might take to get out of the suv craze, is gas at uk or higher prices
btw the regs on suvs wont change in this administration, or any other one for that matter :o  :x the fuel companies have their hands in politicians pockets :x

I use my motorcycle almost exclusivly... I didnt even drive my car all winter.. if I had to go someplace... I took the bike.. Gas here is 2.75 a gallon.. and.. I agree.. people with Big SUV's and the like should be taxed more... especialy the grocery getters.. my sister is one of them.. she wants a big bad suv... but she doesnt need it..  she drives an hour to work and an hour home everyday and she complains about gas prices in her 6 cyl dodge stratus.. I never understood why youd need somthing like that for a daily driver... my daily driver is a 35-40mpg Hyundai Elantra 4cyl... and I have a GMC S-15 thats getting a V-8 transplant that ONLY gets used when I need to A)haul a bike B) pick up building supplies for house renovations or C) when theres 10 foot of snow on the ground cause its 4 wheel drive and sometimes is the only thing that will get out of the driveway to the store.. other wise.. the bike is the first choice (I even pick up the milk with it) or the car if I Absolutely must because people are coming with me or Im getting a lot of groceries

Down here in the swamp it is runnin' 'bout 2.50 or so a gallon(regular). If it gets much worse, I suppose we'll be drivin' around little scooters (all the same color) or riding bicycles with our cute little green uniforms and a cap with a red star in the middle of it covering our heads.

GUILTY!  When I first bought my Exploder, I only really wanted to haul 4 people, 4 snowboards, and 4 bags up to Stevens (or Baker) in a 4WD vehicle that cost less than 13k...  I could have done that in an Eagle.  Remember those things?

Anyway...  Most people juist don't know better...  or just don't care.  It's not the mid-size-15-MPG SUVs that really worry me...  It's the fact that people are still buying H2s and that they came out with an H3...  WTF would someone want a car that gets less than 10 MPG?  A NEW very expensive ugly car at that! :dunno:

I know my wheeled transportation is a Jeep Cherokee.  It is bad on gas but 4wd.  I had a little honda civic but the X took it with her in the divorce.  I then sought a class M so I could get my beloved GS so that I could use the Jeep for what I intended, getting to hard to reach places, snow, towing, and in the event of a big store run that I can't strap to the bike use it.  I plan on riding all year round since I don't have a more efficient car anymore.

I agree with most here though people who buy SUVs do not need them and should go for the more efficient option.  I am positive that we are 1) going to start seeing more small cars and less big SUVs, 2) see more motorcycles/scooters on the road because they are as fuel efficient as it gets and 3) see $3 a gallon and maybe more sometime in our near future.

Some people are saying by Thanksgiving...  I'm thinking sooner... :dunno:  Either way we'll get there and there will be no turning back.  It's only going up...  and up...  and up.

Even so...  $5/Gal is still only 10 cents a mile in the GS!  Nothing like 56 cents a mile in a Hummer.

And when gass hits $5 a gallon I will have a Jeep, GS500 and a scooter

  Bubbles is great...

Gas surcharges are starting to show up on things now... if gas tripled then I wouldn't be surprised if our grocery store bill doubled.  The fact about the US being spread out works against us when it comes to shipping goods, don't forget we foot the bill for that too.
Title: Gas prices!!!
Post by: Cal Price on August 25, 2005, 03:16:20 AM
It's not just gas. I work in the shipping business, world commodity prices / supply and demand affect how much / how many goods are moved around the globe, this in turn affects the shipping rates for tankers, bulk carriers, VLCCs, containers, Panamax ships etc,.

A recent check shows that crude oil, refined products, LPG, coke, coking coal, iron ore, scrap steel, rolled steel and just about every metal mined along with polystyrene granules the basic building block of extrusion moulding are all going through the roof. It's supply and demand as always but demand led by the rapid expension of the Chineese economy as well as some others, India, SE asia and S America that is driving this particular jugganought. Maybe we had best get used to it.

If you live in a steel town and they haven't closed all the steel works yet, or a mining area this could all be good news. If you own a few bulk carriers for iron ore it might be very good news. It's an ill wind as they say....

you'd look great riding your scooter down to your boat wearing those high-collar green denims with a red star, but only when everyone else has a boat, cough!.....

Hey Cal !!
Problem is that I would not be able to "drive down" to the boat. She sits here in the driveway and weighs about 1 ton (US) or so on the trailer.
Methinks I am gonna need more than a 150cc Lambretta!!!!!
Hahhahhahahh. Another problem is that if petrol keeps goin' thru the roof then you may buy MY boat!!!!!!! Along with the GS500!!!! I guess I need to really air up my tires on that Hampton Cruiser 6-speed in the shed.
That's my bicycle that I haven't ridden in 25 years!!!!!!!!! :)
