Title: Will a 2001 fuel tank fit a 1997 GS500?

I know it looks a little different but will it fit?

Yes it will fit on the frame....BUT......the 89-00 seat and tail plastics will not fit correctly to the tank.

Ask Srinath or cheesy, but I think that your handlebars will knock against the the tank at full turn if you switch it out.

It's not worth doing. Much easier to find a '00 and older tank.

Thanks, that makes sense. I have been looking on ebay and I saw a 2001. I'll keep looking.

The front part of the seat is bent up a little bit more than it should be. But I got my 2004 tank for $80 shipped off ebay and have seen crappy 89-00 tanks going for $150 up to $300, so it was definitely worth it. If I find a newer seat available cheap, I am thinking about plastic welding the seats together so it would have the newer front end and the older rear. Here is a picture of what it lloks like:
