so after 2 attempts of applying new liquid gasket (permatx blue gasket maker) the magneto cover still leaks!!!!!

i completely cleaned off the original paper gasket...followed instructions directly and wanted for at least a hour or 2 to cure...

wasted a NICE day to ride...sigh...took me 5 hours...and now i'm just letting it cure completely before tightening it...hope it works...wish me luck

I FRIGGIN HATE GASKETS!!!!!!!!

Wrong product for the job.  The engine covers' mating surfaces are too thin to expect cheapo silicone to hold.  Two better choices:

1. Yamabond/Suzukibond -the flexible goop which seals the engine's case halves.  Available at the dealerships.  Or...

2. Loctite 515 -a flexible anaerobic gel which can be purchased at any auto parts store.

for the outer edge it would be ok, but as the CB shaft bearings get its oil feed through a gally in the side cover you cant keep the pressure with a liquid sealant, it must be paper gasket.   the gasket is only like 8-12$ new.  ive made my own from file cabinet folders and larger Cerial boxes.  it must be the dense compressed cardboard and not the corrigated stuff. fact i coat both sides of my home made gaskets with a thin layer of wheel bearing grease and i can reuse it a few times aslong as i dont over tighten it.

On the edge of the cover is a thin groove. Oil for the CB bearing goes through the gasket into the groove. Then back into the oil passage for the bearing. Using any silicone/ RTV sealer will clog the groove, hence starving the bearing of oil!!!!! THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!!!! :o  :o  :o
If the surfaces are clean, you should be able to use a paper gasket without any sealer. If I use anything, it is Permatex liquid aviation gasket sealer.
It comes in a small bottle with a brush attached to the cap. This is mainly to hold the gasket in place more than anything else.
The oil passage on the clutch side is by the crank seal behind the ignition plate area. So it's less likely to get sealed up. The flywheel side is MUCH more prone to clogging since it is such a small groove on the edge of the case. I can't stress enough how easy it is to miss this and clog the groove with too much sealer!!!  :nono:  :nono:

thanks a lot!!!!!!...i'll make sure the sealant didn't clog it up...
