Hey all, A few months ago, I picked up my new car, an 05' Maxima SE:

My question is that with gas prices being where they are now (Almost $3/Gal for premium at most places in NYC) I am concerned with what I am putting in my car. It is costing me about $45 to fill up my tank now. It says premium only- but is putting in lower grade (87) fuel going to have an adverse effect on the performance and longevity of the car?
Not really, it only matters if you start knocking. I'd hope to god a maxima wouldn't have detonation problems.

In older cars, that's true. That's not true anymore. Modern cars have knock sensors that detect knock and retard timing. That results in poor performance and decreased gas mileage. If it says put in premium, put it in.
+1
My car runs like crap on 89 or 87. I have to get minimum of 91 octane, but most places around here have 92. I get better mileage with the higher octane gas too.
Yeah, i had a 91 caddy deville and it required premium. I never ran lower than that in mine becuase my father had the same year and model, different car though, and he ran mid or cheap. I averaged about 8 to 9 miles per gallon better on the highway and 4-5 mpg around town better. And mine didn't ping or run like crap.
Take me on........

oddly enuff, my parents also have an 05 SE maxima 6spd. my dad ran premium for a while and then tried 87 octane (regular) and had no ill effects, so far that is. But its up to you.
