Title: do you think I need a new exhaust
Post by: Soaring on August 23, 2005, 12:49:01 PM
dear all,

a noob trying to get his bike in shape is seeking your advice once again. This time I am trying to figure out whether I need a new exhaust. I am a budget conscious student so I really need to know before investing. I made some pics of my '90 exhaust that can be found here:

alexey.ravicev.com/g

and I also found in trade section an exhaust from 98 sold by r1z. He lives very close to me and I can save shipping that way. He is asking $50.

Please let me know if these would be $50 well invested. picture 5428 is the shot from the rear wheel to show the dent where exhaust hits one of the bolts on the inside of the frame. There are also downward puffs of air from exhaust when the bike runs, which made me think of changing exhaust in the first place.

Also I am curious just how important a good exhaust is?

Thank you all in advance for helping me out here!

Alexey

cut the can off and get a junkyard slipon if you can't get a whole stock system for less than 50 bones.  on that note, if you do get a new one I want your headder,

NP. thats what im here for. haha. Just use a can of high heat paint, like black BBQ paint. It will look like new. Just put masking tape around the stainless steel muffler plate not to get paint on it. Take ur headers off and uinbolt the muffler and paint it. Simple as that. Will look brand new.

thanks guys!

so I got a feeling that people think that it is not really necessary for me to change the exhaust, right? at least not for $50?

scottpeel: $25 sounds good but I can imagine how much the shipping will be.. I guess will be comparable with $50 that I can pay and get it right away.

davipu: I am new to cycles and at this point I am ready to wrench, but not cut/weld. I am not even sure where the motorcycle junjyards are here

ajgs: the bike looks beat up. I got it not in the best shape, just because I was desperate to ride and didn't have money. They in just about a month or two nice american lady made a uturn into me from the wrong lane and without using turn signals. So I spent 4 months in a cast, bike spent 2 years in the yard. Now I am trying to get it back together as the itch is still there. I already made it run although not smooth yet and look into other things now.

stef: I am not so much concerned with the looks now, I just want to make this thing run good. It just looks like this steel thing peels off a little and there are puffs of air towards the earth, so I thought it might be bad for the bike, but I am not really sure if it really matters at all. so if the looks is the only problem I'd just stick to my pipe.

also to everybody: what is headers? sorry, might be a dumb question, but I am just learning :) (and english is not my native lang. on top of that :)

Headers are the part of the exhaust that attaches to the engine and go until the smaller seperate tubes connect together into one larger pipe. The mid pipe is the part from the end of the headers to the canister.

If the exhaust is for 50$ and it looks good, why not buy it for 50$.

since you siad that the exaust is hitting the frame in your first post, that right there will tell you that it's bent in, and will probably explain your puffs of air problem.  just spend the 50 bones on a new one.

Want an immaculate stocker can for $35 shipped?

Take off the headers, scrub them with a scouring pad over and over until every trace of rust is gone, cut off your can and get someone to weld on the new one for a few bucks, and paint it with high-temp matte black rattlecan from Home Despot.
