Hello
I have a huge problem. Last week I was on a freeway going about 90mph when all of a sudden my engine just died. I managed to pull over to the side. At first I thought that it was the battery, because my battery was almost dead for a while now, so after I towed ity home I put in a new one.
When I out in a new battery the bike started up, but was idleing very violentlywith a loud clanking noise. After about one min of idleing the bike died.
I took the bike to a local bike shop, and today they called me back. They said that when they first took a look at the bike there was almost no oil in it. So they added some oil and it still would not start. They took the cover off and saw that something over there is locked. So they told me my engine is dead. THey said that as it stands I'm at $85, and if I wan't they could take the engine appart to figure out if its even repairable or if i need to change the whole engine, which is not worth it. TO take it appart and find the problem they said will be $300.
What should I do? my bike is a 2002 gs with just over 4K mi, so its almost new. Last time I changed oil on it was about 3500 miles, so about 600 miles ago.
What kind of oil did you use? Was it 10W-Nothing?
That sucks. Start looking for a new motor. I bet you seized a piston or two.
Lack of oil while running is bad. Crank bearings, rings, seized pistons, burnt cams and valves are just a few of the items that could be damaged. Tough to say which one it is without taking it apart but either way, the motor will need to be taken apart to be rebuilt.
btw...what cover did they remove?
If it was the right side ignition cover, sounds like at least one of the pistons may have seized and the crank will not turn.
Sorry to hear that. I, too, would look for another motor. another reason to check your oil level weekly.
