Title: Grrrr .... I hate shoei ...
Post by: The Buddha on August 29, 2005, 07:10:20 AM
Yea I bought one, Was glad it fit great ... OK I thought fantastic, first ride last night, and the freaking thing presses up against my cheeks and squishes it into my teeth, I wake up this morning with insides of my mouth on fire ... The lining of my mouth is shredded ... WTF ... Horrendous design. Arai's are worse usually. I shouldve stayed with Bieffe, but they dont have my BR-16 anymore. WTF I am so screwed.
Cool.

What size do you wear?  A friend of mine is looking for a helmet.  He is borrowing a spare that I recently purchased.  The helmet he is using is a medium Shoei, size 7 1/8 to 7 1/4 size which seems to fit him pretty well.

If yours is a medium, then maybe you can sell it to him?

PM me or email me.

It's your fat face Shrinath, got same problem myself.

Wanted to switch to a full face a few years ago myself and couldn't find one I could open my mouth and close without biting insides of my chubby cheeks.  Settled for a Symax flip face for a couple years and it was tatalled along with my 97 Gs late in 03.

Last year I was determined to get a full face to replace the Symax and tried on all they had and settled for the Shoei RF1000.  Found a XL that was pretty comfortable and was ready to buy when I discovered the removable cheek pads and took them out and helmet was too loose without them.  Bought the L instead and rode home with my mouth clamped closed.   :thumb:   Next morning I took out the pads and reduced the thickness of the foam in them to about half.  Been a comfortable good fitting helmet since.  Your Shoei have remocable cheek pads?

Added another HJC flip face this summer for all the 90F weather we've had, like to flip it open when caught in slow hot traffic.  Still wear the RF1000 for serious riding.

Don't chew gum and ride at the same time?

Odd that you had a poor fit with the Shoei. i have a long head and Shoei's RF series are one of the few helmets i have found that fit well.

Like others have said, don't blame Shoei if the helmet doesn't fit and you didn't do your home (head?) work...
Title: Homework
Post by: The Buddha on August 29, 2005, 11:25:05 AM
Yea Not shoeii's fault ... maybe. I believe they are meant to fit this way though. Those cheek pads are the size of an elephant's butt, no way they dont make cheek contact with anyone's cheeks ... Mine aren't removable (AFAIK) I think people just put up with it. Now those insanely tight cheek pads may help in a crash. Like your head is so tight in there ... there is no movement where your head knocks about inside it. The fact that I dont like it just means that I am just not into trading some light pain every day for the more severe pain in case of an accident. I ride everyday, and say I crash once in 3 years (whihc itself is less than my actual frequency, driveway and other tip overs exempted) and say that crash is one where the helmet takes a beating whihc again is not, I have only had 1 crash in 4 where the helmet even got into the act, so once every 3 years you'd ahve less pain ... and you're taking the insane option of little less everyday face pain. Yea I am begining to want a scorpion or Agv - pacific and flyer looked nice. But breaking this in may help.

Maybe i'll buy it for myself and use it as a daytime helmet so that I don't have to switch my visor in and out all the time :-)

I'll ask around and see if anyone i know is looking for a helmet.  What shall i tell them that you want for it?

I have a big jaw.  The Scorpion is snug, but the foam is yielding enough that it doesn't pinch my cheeks in.

My boyfriend just bought a Scorpion helmet a few weeks ago, and he loves his. He's trying to get me to buy one, but I'm resisting (my ears go so nicely on my black XS generic helmet). I'll likely go with Scorpion within a few months.

Don't some helmets have swappable cheek pieces?

Did you fail to notice your fit problem when you were walking around the store wearing the helmet?  15 minutes minimum to be sure there's no pressure points or funny fits

I fail to see how this has anything to do with Shoei

Yea Yea Yea ... OK fine I got that helmet as part of some bike I was buying ... yea Fine whatever ... looking a gift horse in the mouth ... but the mouth is trying to bite my cheeks off ... Its got everything to do with shoeii ... they are uncomfortable, and most likely people are buying into the hype or they want that extra protection because they think they are soooo insanely cool and such high performance when riding that they must have that extra protection ... Basically statistically, 99.9999% of people will never need a shoeii on the street - just anecdotal evidence from my past ... and its down right painful all of the time. BTW it seems to be breaking in a bit, my cheeks hurt a shade less today inspite of being chewed raw, but it was a shorter run today ... anyway its the design that is geared to be super super super safe and very very very uncomfortable.
Cool.

So a particular helmet doesn't fit your head and its Shoei's fault?  I have had many helmets and none fit me as well as my current Shoei RF-1000.  My last HJC felt like a bucket of cement lined with sandpaper, but really it just didn't fit my head right.  It sounds like some people just need to find one that works with their particular head shape and quit whining.

I have a Shoeii helmet... I really like it.  it fits me much better than my old HJC did.  I didn't realize how much better until I'd worn the Shoeii for awhile and put the other one back on.

One thing about it, though, is it did take a couple weeks to really break it in.  I was a very tight fit initially, but now it's great.

Maybe if you give it a bit of time, you'll find it isn't as bad anymore... the padding breaks in to fit your face better, while still holding steady.

just my $.02

Title: Poor fit
Post by: The Buddha on August 30, 2005, 05:47:31 PM
OK the whole point was ... the poor fit is in the design. BTW I found every damn helmet made (Tried HJC, KBC, Shoei RF 1000 and X-11, Arai quantum F, Scorpion, Bell and some more I dont remember and they all suck - the top of this pile is KBC and shark ... But none are as good as the Bieffe I gave to the guy that got my bike last week) The problem is cheek padding, excessive and crushing my cheeks into my teeth. They all are, and I believe they are all copying shoei. In any case, my real beef with shoei has now spread to all makes. Discomfort everyday isn't a worth while trade off IMHO for that one crash in 5 years (yea more like 10 yrs) that will need the 10% extra protection I'd get from a shoei or a copy cos they all are.
The same freaking Pepsi VS coke connundrum. Every store brand, no name cola is a coke wanna be. if you like pepsi ... buy pepsi, no store copies come close. BTW what if they stopped making Pepsi ...  :x  ... I want to find that dude that got my helmet and swap the new Shoei for that old bieffe ... OK fine breaking it in is an option ...      Yea 2 hours wont do is what I been told. 2 week minimum with 1 hour per day. OK I'll check back in in 2 weeks on this thread.
Cool.

Personally, I love Shoei helmets. They are the most comfortable helmets on the market for me. They fit my head perfectly and don't press my cheeks in at all. I went helmet shopping for a long time, trying on every model of every brand, but I kept going back to Shoei. I've wear a size Small in Shoei's line. I've worn the Shoei RFR, as well as a Z-II, and I recently picked up my new RF-1000 on eBay for $242 shipped.

Bieffe, for me, is extremely painful to wear. In size small it is too big, but in extra small it squeezes my head so tight I need Advil after 5 minutes. Other brands either don't conform to my head shape as well as the Shoei's do, or the material quality isn't comfortable enough.

Post by: The Buddha on August 31, 2005, 09:56:41 AM
OK I didn't try one on ... yesterday I tried all of them (with the exception of AGV and bieffe) and they all suck. Yea I agree its now super super safe ... yea we bought ourselves a whole extra 1% extra safety Yipee yea  :o , and also got as a side benefit a 300% extra discomfort  :x . Yea they all now are copies of the shoei and they are are insanely painful. BTW scorpion has a liner we can get for $40, and I can use cheek pads off the XXL in a L helmet. I can also buy thinner cheek pads for a RF 1000 also $35 or so and fit that in the L, the rest ... You're screwed. BTW I may cram a well inflated wine bag in the Large RF 800 I got and compress its padding out to where it wont kill me. I got this free, and want to use it. It was perfect size for me, but cheek pads ... nope I cant use it that way. Bieffe used to make helmets that fit me like a glove ... 3 different models and nothing but prefect ... old pair of jeans fit. These fit like a pair of leather pants made for Axl Rose ... Heck even he looks like He in pain ... and may explain his high voice ...    in the old days ... as well as the writhing moves he used to make.

One thing that I notably like about Shoei is the quality of build. They don't feel cheap or rickety. I tried on an Icon helmet recently and the air vents on it were cheap and seemed easily breakable. They were composed of thin, cheap feeling plastic on a weak hinge that was also notably cheaply made. Likewise on other low-cost models by other brands. Shoeis and Arais as well as a few others just have a high build quality.

OK Yea fitting heads ... very important ... and now everyone is making helmets to fit the shoei head, and no one cares about mine ... yea R'gal thanks for pointing that out ... I will machine my head into fitting the copper kettle I got lying about ...  :x
Now HJC and Icon and KBC felt a shade plasticy, Arai felt very very plasticy. The Shoei felt OK, not great ... but no complaints. The Bieffe I gave up as well as the BR 15 I used to have ... felt solid solid solid ... like a tank ... It also out weighed the Shoei by a good 50-75%. No one here has used a BR 16 or BR 15 Bieffe I can tell. Nothing like it. Anyday ... I will be able to bash in a shoei or a Arai with that I think. The Older Bieffe I had before that was solid too, but memory isn't that great. Only helmet I believe can hold a candle to the Bieffe 15/16's is a Bell. M 2 I believe ... I should try that out in a better size I think. All the dumb stores around here have shoei, arai, suomy (talk about tacky ... that's the master ... just that paint on them ... can you say Poser) ... scorpion and nothing else.
