I dropped my bike off at Olathe Suzuki a week ago b/c I haven't been able to do anything more than temporary fixes it seems.
They gave me a call today and the problem(s) are:
no compression in left cylinder
bent exhaust valve
incorrect valve clearance
:? what? $100 parts and $300 for labor? ehh.. ok..

If only I knew how to fix these problems myself.
They won't be done with it until next tuesday, so I better save a few dollars.
That's actually a pretty good price, if you ask me. Those heads are expensive. Actually, I doubt they are replacing the head because the head is going to be matched to the jugs(because of cam clearances). What are they replacing?
I bet they're just replacing the valve and guides and checking the clearances. Assuming the no-compression is in the cylinder with the bad valve. Not a bad price laborwise. Dunno about parts.

Someone correct me if I am wrong: the cams in the GS don't use bearings. So the cams are seated in the cylinder and they head but use. A new head may call for new cams, and on down the line.
I still think that if they can get it running for you for $400.00, that you should be happy and go on with it. That isn't a bad price for the amount of damage your bike seems to have.
That labor is cheap. That's that, about two hours?

The cams do not use bearings and can be used from one motor to another. But I still not see what this has to do with this work. :dunno:
A valve costs about $40, head gasket $25, (4) o-ring seals $16. Dealer costs may be a little higher.
I think that we were all assuming that the head was damaged when the valve was bent (assumption based upon relative cost of parts listed in your thread v. cost of parts listed in initial post).

400 is too low for that. Gaskets are $60 or so, then there is the hone and re ring (whihc they may skip on) and of course bend valves need to have guides seats etc all removed and swapped out. Seats you can re cut if its not fooked, but guides are toast. 2 hours - no way. Cos motor had to come out for head to come out isn't it ??

OK then ... I have heard you say that before, but manual says its gotta be out, and BTW $400 parts and labor - no shop is going to yank the head whether or not the motor stays in the frame.

which manual and where? you can pull the head, cyl and pistons in frame.
Maybe the Haynes (I do not have one anymore) since both the Clymer and factory Suzuki manual state that the head can be removed without removing the motor. See page 3-3 in the factory manual for all the components removable with the engine in the frame.
