Title: NEED HELP, I REALLY HATE THIEVES
Post by: dyran on August 29, 2005, 11:08:34 PM
My house got broken into and the bastard took a bunch of stuff including the keys to my motorcycle, now I have it locked up and it's still there but he was scared off so he didn't take it yet but I want to change my key so I have a different one, how much and how can I do that?

Well I'd get a couple of different locks on it NOW.
make sure it is chained to something too.

Replacement ignition and fuel caps can be bought reasonably cheap but they won't have matching keys anymore. The seat lock I believe is imposible to replace without major surgery on the bike

Sorry to hear about you missing your chance to use a claymore mine.

Everything Red_Phil said.

Some little sods in the 'hood think it's a great idea to go around at night busting mirrors and ripping wiper blades from cars just lately so perhaps a claymore might be good,....Naaaaaar againt the law here, perhaps a wire garrot!

Try and chain it to a railing or an item of street furniture if you can't sort the locks immediatly.

A quick-release ignition sounds like an inventive idea, with an tamper-proof socket so the would-be theives wouldn't be able to hotwire it. Hmm...

This post is dated, so this could be used for application of patent.

Lets see, 200 rounds of 7.62x39, 400 rounds of 45 ACP, 100 rounds of 9x18, 100 rounds of 38 special and finally 7 rounds of OO buckshot in the mag.  Go ahead punk, make my day.  Did I fire 2000 rounds or only 1999, do ya feel lucky?

Sorry for your loss, thieves should be hung, the worst form of scum.  Sorry, don't even have a bike yet to be of any help with the keys.

Just a thought from one of my cage driving co-workers.

A breakers yard may be able to sell you a set of keys with matching ignition and gas cap. He just did that with his car (Ignition, gas cap, 2 doors and boot all on 1 key apparently).

Still no help with the seat lock I'm afraid.

Can you remove the seat lock and change the tumlers to the same configuration as the others?  A lock smith might be able to do that.

that might work well but I don't even have a helmet lock so I'm not too worried about that. I found out that a new  tank and ignition lock with nonmatching keys is going to cost me $395.46 and it will take a week to get it in making getting to work impossible.  The bastards stole a shitload of my stuff and I'm a poor student who's paying my own way through and I check for insurance from my parents company and it'll cost me 800 in deductibles or some shaZam! like that I f@ckin' hate insurance companies. GRRRRR. I will checkout with the lock smith and the wreckers thanks for the ideas.

There might be a way to get just a new key cut...  I've heard of people doing that through stealerships...

You'd run the risk that the thieves would be able to get your bike, but as long as you put a few other locks on it......   :dunno:

Yeah they can cut a new key but then everytime I leave my bike somewhere in town I'll be worried someone will steal it. Damn I don't have time for this shaZam!. Sorry for venting a bit but I'm just a little bit annoyed.

Well...  Make sure you lock it up with other devices...

Or...  Sell it after you get the key.   :o

how about trying to find a matching ignition/gas tank off a junked/wrecked bike?  That way you could still have matching keys

i dont need to touch the ignition, nor anyting near the handle bars to hotwire the bike to run. unless you have completely rewired everything on the bike into sep systems. ive known a few former bike thieves and if it isnt chained down, all they need to do is pop the steering enough to turn handle bars, and they can start the bike and ride it away, lights and all.

i just laid hands on an extra ignition with a key. its alittle sticky from sitting in parts box but the key does work the lock. probly needs a good lube. make me an offer.
