Title: Bedding in new pads

I just replaced the front brake pads, is there anything special I should do for the first couple miles?

I thought you needed advice on sheets and stuff for your new apartment.

What kind of brake pads did you go with?  I need some too.

Parts Unlimited SBS Sintered (not sure on spelling there).

I figured I would try a couple long slow speed stops before anything else.

New apartment? NO!   I'm closing on a house in three weeks! With a two car heated garage. Of course some damn kids have busted all the windows out of garage but I'm going to work out a deal with the seller on that one.

Don't be too light, or hard, on the brakes or they'll glaze over. Don't be on them too hard for a long time or they'll glaze over. Or, just plain don't be on them for a long time!

I do the same treatment as I do for car pads.  Go out when there aren't many people around, and do HARD stops from progressively faster speeds.  Do that until you feel some fade, and then go home and stay off of the brakes until they've cooled.

You want to effect pad transfer from the pads to the rotors.  Without good transfer initially, you'll get little chunks of pad deposit, which give you an uneven pulsy brake feel.

With regular pagination and font size, it won't be half that.  I reread it after I posted it to make sure I didn't miss anything. :dunno:

Regardless, it's worth a read.  Brakes are the only thing between you and that idiot cager who just turned out right in front of you.  IMO, it behooves anyone in a vehicle to be familiar with general brake principles as well as things specific to his or her vehicle.

Great, thanks for the post... very informative and helpful info I've always wondered!!!  I've heard a lot of it from people along the way, but its good to actually read 'WHY' you should do the stuff your Dad tells you to!
