The tag on the one I picked up said 5lbs.

The guy at the parts counter said that everyone ignores this.

How much weight are you thinking of putting on it?

If it looks like this:

then I'd suspect it would take at least 20-30 lbs (10-15 Kg), perhaps more so long as you don't hit bumps.

GSJack put a box on his oem rack and it started cracking where it attaches to the bike.  He attached some struts downward from the back of the rack and attached to bike near his license plate.  There are some pictures on a previous post.

i know someone that hsa probably pu about 20kg on his and never had problems, but its supposed to take 10kg, its the weld and not the tubeing that the wait is calculated for, so do as was mentioned and weld extra supports, i had a one that was made in france that had supports to the rear indicators aswell

What is the suzuki part # for that? That would be great for the short trips I plan to do (after the bike is fixed).

THANKS, BigTwin

http://www.ventura-bike.com/english/products/pack_system/index.html

Try the above link and see what you think, these are the most common rack and luggage system used in Aust if you dont have one of these your just not travelling with good luggage in Aust, also good for pillons who dont want to hold the grab rail and you dont want them holding you.
I mentioned these a while ago in a post and was really suprised to find almost nobody in the States knows of them as they are much better then ventura top box, the bag holds more and can be placed in a more central postion then the top box and the rack can be removed alot easier then the top box and mounting system.
Let me know what you think :thumb:

My givi rack says 6lbs...  I've had at least 30 lbs on it with no issues.  But, it's all thick and plastic...  So, I can't really say about the Suzuki one.

I had the Suzuki rack - it held up fine - but broke the frame where it attaches.  I never carried more than about 10 lbs in a top box that I mounted to the rack - maybe 12 pounts total including the box.

Had the frame repaired by welding flat bar stock in place of the stock mounts and installinf a Five Star rack & givi saddlebags & top box.  Have carried much wieght in those bags with no problems.

The Suzuki rack is metal.  Ja, I imagine the mount will be the weak point, not the rack itself.  Find a bud who's handy with a welder, and find a good support bracket.  They probably erred on the side of easy-for-average-Joe-to-mount, so a brace would dramatically increase the capacity.
