Title: ignition advancer/ sproket question gs500f
Post by: fast05 on September 02, 2005, 05:47:45 PM
hello everyone, ive been looking like crazy to find an agnition advancer for my 05 500f. problem is, they dont make them. but, i was woundering if i could use one from an older gs500? is it the same ignition dose anyone know? as far as i know its the same motor, the only thing is it has a newer rs series mikuni carbs on it. and also i see everyone upgrades to a 15 tooth front sproket. dose that make a huge diffrence? and dose anyone have a 14 tooth sproket? if anyone could help that would be awsome. -Rob

Not everyone changes to a 15T...  I only did a 15T 'cause mine was shot and the 16T was back ordered...

It makes some difference, but not a HUGE difference.  Do a search (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/search.php) on it...  You'll find lots of info.

Some people go to a 17T for better gas milage/top speed.  Some people have done 13T and I'm sure some 14T...

I ordered a 14t sprocket from bikebandit.com and will  be installing it sometime next week.  I'll be sure and let you know how it is..

you could just do this for the ignition advancer
http://www.gstwin.com/diy_timing_advance.htm
and for the 14t sprocket from what i have been reading lowers the top speed but is good for "round the town" driving and gives a little bit more pep. i am planning on doing this mod simply because you can get a new sprocket for less than $10 plus ship and i dont like to ride my neked bike much over 80-85 any way

No. You cannot use a 89-03 rotor. The ignition systems was changed in 04. Completely different rotor design and pickup. You could try the DIY as suggested. But as far as I know, noone has done it and reported back with the results.
