Post by: rjjablo on September 07, 2005, 10:10:55 AM
Will the Vance and Hine Exhaust 12029 that is listed in the Modifications section fit a 2005 GS500. I am wondering about clearance from the Bodywork

But Srinath says they're made of crap.  Buy at your own risk :o
Title: rust

The thing rusts easy easy easy ... I had one that was so bad I was worried I'd blow a hole in it ... I started the bike and it was literally scaling and flaking off in large sections. Was glad to see it was not blown through.
Cool.
Srinath.

Hmm, maybe it rusts more by region. I had a V&H Supersport on my '92, and it wasn't rusted at all. Okay, well maybe a TINY TINY bit, but not nearly as much as everyone says they do.

Austin? Don't you need moisture in the air to make rust?

I thought you just needed oxygen and iron. I don't remember. I'll tell you sometime in the winter after I finish my Intro to Chem class!
Title: Humidity
Post by: The Buddha on September 07, 2005, 01:49:21 PM
I have seen cars from the 30's in AZ that have no rust on them, 1 year in East coast its right about ready to blow a hole. Humidity plays a huge part. The funny thing is, in CA most of the time it wont rust at all. But leave it in the rain and it will rust, a lot, fast ... much more than the rain in NC. I believe the acidity in the air also makes it rust fast.
Cool.

Well, in Seattle...  If it isn't rusty, it's moldy.

(Yes... All you need is oxygen and iron, but air is mostly nitrogen...  So, water helps with rusting...  or something...  )

I think the water helps facilitate bonding between the iron and the oxygen atoms.

Heh. Water helps with bondage.

But air is only 20% oxygen and water is 33%...  Or something...

aye, but when you increase the humidity level you also increase the O2 level by 50% and then if IRC hydrogen is acidic and acts as a catalist when in a higher humid climate.

You clearly need more beer.

Man, who needs Chemistry when you have the GSTwins board?

...Yeah. I was wondering how long it would take someone to notice. Hell, it took me a few days to realize! It was from that dang GS500's Evil Twin (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20595) thread. I might not be able to subtract correctly, but I can evaluate a rotational solid improper integral piece of cake!

I knew a girl that was a wiz at theoretical physics, but always struggled with English.

She thought "Puck" was the past tense of pick.

Yup ... couldn't have put it better myself, just to add that it will rust faster as the neagive logarithm of hydrogen Ion concentration is reduced by 50% when as it rusts it tends to release nitrogen into the plasmoidic stream that surrounds the metal and oxygen is attracted to the free nitrogen there by making rust. Its nasty stuff actually.
Cool.

Keep a good thick coat of hi temp paint on the exhaust every year and you shouldnt have any problems.
Title: Yea
Post by: The Buddha on September 08, 2005, 07:32:59 AM
Yea, probably ... but who does it every year, worse, its going to rust faster if you skip it, and its thinner wall to boot. Stock pipes will stand over 2 years wihtout rusting, and will be able to rust a lot more wihtout blowing a hole.
Cool.

I did mine every year, besides it isnt that hard, you have the dumb thing off every 2000 miles to change the oil filter.

Yup you do ...    ... its super light ... which is the big attraction for it really, for a often used street bike its just impractical. 2K miles was 20 days for me at one time ... 3K was a month ... had to have 4-5 bikes just so I dont have to oil change them every 3-4 weeks.
Cool.
