My fork seals are a little cracked... seeping a tiny bit... was going to make it a winter project along with a tire change, but a nail in the back tire last weekend has me putting a new pair of tires on this weekend. I was wondering if it would make sense to do the fork seals while I have the front end half apart. This is the first bike I've wrenched on, so I don't really know what all is involved with either job (front rim off and fork seal replacement). Whaddaya think!?! :dunno: Thanks! :thumb:
If you have (or can get) the seals and fork oil and tools I would say "Go for it".
If you don't have a manual, this job alone would more than pay for one. I have done 2 sets of fork seals on others' GS500s, but I still followed along in my Haynes manual when I replaced the seals on my bike a couple weeks ago.
Also, if you plan to wait for a manual, and you don't already have Progressive fork springs, consider "springing" for a pair of those at the same time.
Speaking of tools, you might need to fab up a tool to loosen the damper bolt. See the first few posts of this thread (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20456), and the entire thread that davipu links to.
PS - One other thing. When removing the front fender, turn the socket wrench under the fender to remove the nuts. DON'T try to turn the bolts from the top with the Allen wrench. :roll:
Thanks for the tip... I'll head to home depot tomorrow and get the pieces to make the fork tool. I have to go there anyways to get a C-clamp to break the seal on the tires, get cotter pins, etc. I think I might go with some spacers and 15wt oil for the forks. I am not looking to dump any more money in the bike right now for springs... we'll see how that does me. Thanks again!
If you use the longer PVC space mod along with 15wt oil you will notice a huge difference that is very pleasing. I reccomend Bel-Ray oil.
