Title: Central Texans
Post by: Alphamazing on September 08, 2005, 06:57:45 AM
Any guys from in/around Austin want to go for a ride sometime in the future? A few weeks maybe? This is just a general thing to see how many are interested.

Well, if there are any central Texans who are interested in going for a ride this weekend (10/8, most likely) let me know. It'll be a very lazy ride, just to relax, enjoy the scenery, take it easy. Let me know if you want in and I'll send you the details.

Hmm, I'd probably be up for that except that I have to work that morning and don't get off until ~3:30... Anyway, that's a late start. Sunday I'm doing the ERC up in Pflugerville. Maybe another weekend?

Definitely. I try to go on a ride (150+ miles minimum) at least once a week.

Yup. Indeedy we are. There are a few more guys around  here that I know of. Lusky and callmelenny are two other GSers in Austin. Larry is selling his bike next month though :(. I'm going to create a mailing list of guys to ride with here in Austin. My father has a group he rides with, and we're all more than welcome to tag along.

So gimme your e-mail address and I'll get you added onto the list.

I really want to ride the Llano loop sometime soon. I absolutely love it.

We start here in Austin and take 2222 to 2769 for a bit, then we ride Lime Creek Road (slowly) to 1431 (one of my favorite roads ever) out to Marble Falls. Then we ride up 281 until we get to Inks Lake State Park and we'll ride Park Road 4 (one of my other favorite roads ever). We then take 16 down to RR1323 down to 281 again for a short distance, heading out to 2766 which we  take all the way to 3238, which takes us back to 71, and back into Austin.

It's something like 250 miles, high speed sweepers, nothing too technical with the exception of Lime Creek, which we would take slow. 1431 and Park Road 4 are absolutely fantastic roads to ride on.

I rode out to Cooper's in Llano a couple of weeks ago with the lady to grab some BBQ. It's such a nice ride, perfect time to do it now too, before it gets much colder.

We took pretty much the same route, 2222 -> 2769 -> LCR -> 1431 -> 281 -> PR4 but, I've never taken 1323 or any of those other roads back... We need to head out there...

Yeah, I took the Cooper's in Llano ride about a month ago. Good good roads. I'd love to go riding this weekend, except I've never led a group before, so I'm kinda nervous. That and I usually go with someone who knows the turning points better than I do!

So, ride this upcoming Saturday maybe? Sunday? I'd like to get a decent sized group together (at least 5 or 6 people) so we can safely split into a fast group and a slow group. I'd like to do the Llano ride or the one I mentioned prior, out to Oatmeal and Burnet. If I can convince my father to join, he's got a big riding group he can get in touch with from his FZ1 board. I'll see what I can do.

Well, as usual I work on Saturday morning until 2.30 (ugh, work). But I'm off on Sunday and don't have anything to do until later in the day/evening. So I'd be up for something on Sunday. Let me know if you get something together. It'll be a nice contrast to ride those roads again so soon solo... 2 up gets a little cramped on the little GS after 100 miles if you ask me...

Dammit. It's supposed to rain on Sunday. All over central Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, etc...

Looks like maybe not this weekend, unless we can get out on Friday.

If the weather changes up I'll let you know. Maybe I'll do two rides. One Friday and one Sunday. I love 1431 and PR4 enough that I wouldn't mind riding them again. And again. And again.

Sundays are usually pretty good for me too. The roads are patrolled less as well, from what I'm told.

I seriously hope the rain clears up.

Alright everyone, looks like Sunday is going to be absolutely gorgeous. High of 81, partly cloudy, no rain. How's THAT for damned good riding weather?

We'll be running to either Llano or Oatmeal/Burnet. The majority of the roads are the same either way, just some minor differences. Pretty much all of it is high speed sweepers, nothing too technical, except for Lime Creek if we decide to ride it.

I'll PM and e-mail the people I know about. Anyone else, feel free to contact me. I'll post more details later.

Sunday is Jan. 1! I'm actually flying out to Lubbok to spend time with my friend in Plainview that day, so no chance for me. I'd love to though.

Currently: My tach is down for the count. It works, but the housing is shot. I need to replace the whole tach & housing assembly because they are one sealed unit. My speedo works and is undamaged, but the metal bracket and black plastic back housing are. I need to replace the back housing because it was damaged at a mounting point. I need to put my new bars on, get a new bar end weight screw, put my old rubber brake line back on, and get a front brake lever. After that the bodywork and lights need to go back on. I've also got another project I need to complete by the Jan 1. This'll be a loooooong week.

Alpha, I was up in Austin all day last Saturday. I wanted to see some good roads. I was hoping to get in contact with you but the forum went down a couple days before that. Oh well. Next time.

All I could have done was tell you about them, sadly. I'm still in Plainview, TX, and my bike is still down and out. All I need now is a brake lever though, which should be coming in soon enough, I hope.

Next time you're in Austin definitely let me know. You can e-mail me any time, too.

How's the weather been in Austin, everyone? As soon as I get my bike running I want to go ride!! School is starting up again, so I might have to do a short one around town. Ah well.

short !! around town !!? never heard of a short one ! :P no the last 2 weekends i'v put in 200 mile runs :) i like parkroad 4 . alpha  wheres lime creek road? i hear you talk about it but have no clue to where it is .. i know its around the austin area .. but you know how many roads there are around that town ! . i think i'm gonna save up and take a trip out to BIG BEND,tx   its a national park one of the guys from work just came back from there and said he had a good time ! . only down side is its about 500miles from Killeen . :| but i'd leave on a fri. stay the night .. ride pretty much all day sat.  ride then stay one last night and come back . he said the cabin hotel thing up there was pretty nice looking .
oh  hey budrick320 if you ever want to meet up and ride i'm game to ! :) if the wind is not to bad sunday i'm probly gonna ride in to roundrock and get on 1431 ride to 29 then run 29 to parkroad 4 .  parkroad 4 ends up on 281 . from there i'd ride home :)

Lime Creek is off 2222 south, near Volente Beach. I'm pretty sure that's where it is. Do a MapQuest on it and it should tell you. Be careful on that road, as it's very tight and twisty. It's pretty much nothing but decreasing radius turns. That means you think you're going through alright and suddenly you're heading towards the edge of the road. It's also got a problem with having sand and dirt and rocks in the turns. A friend of mine lowsided a few months ago and cracked and engine cover and tore up his plastics at the least. Be careful if you go on LCR.

ohh ok off camber corners i like'em :) if weather lets me i'm gonna hit it up :) think it will be fun .. but on the real . probly .. march .. before it starts to get hot .. how about a few of us .. set a date off on the calender . one of the guys from work went to big bend last weekend and he said he loved it !  its  SW of  SA :) its about 500 miles from killeen.. soo .. its not that far off from austin .. maybe by 20 miles .. was wondering if we could pick a date in say mid to late march .. depending on weather to make a trip down there ? he was saying that it is super curvey down there and he had a blast ! . they have a hotel thing there .. he said its probly about 80 to 90 bucks a night .. i can save up and get that much . the way he talks about it its worth it ! . so we have any takers ? i'll go on my own .. i just think it would be better if i had a few ppl with me .. he met a bunch of ppl down there .

That sounds like a good trip. I'd probably be in for it. Hell, we can pick up Budrick in SA and bring him along to split the cost of the room, too. I'm going to be heading out to Nacogdoches a few times a year. I hear there are some great roads around that way. Have you heard anything about the stuff out there?
Title: Re: Central Texans
Post by: FearedGS500 on January 11, 2006, 09:06:00 PM
nope not out there . i'm just starting to learn the roads around here . my grandfather and my dad ( before my dad passed)  use to go riding alll the time . and i just hear from other ppl like you .. about parkroad 4 .. PR4 is fun .. short .. not to bad .. wish it had a few more corners and a bit longer .. why i cant wait to hit LCR sunday if its not to windy .then big bend . they guy at work say its mad fun and crazy. said the speed limit on that road was 50 and they where doing 70! (and mind you not all these guys where on crusisers ! )  but big bend is in the mountins ( well .. its probly hills compared to what i'v seen when i spent them few months in the bottom of the smokeys :P )  but he said if your faint at heart its best you dont go .. cuz you look over and you know if you go off your not gonna live .. and i love stuff like that .. i like curvey turns and stuff .. he said one of the guys had a helment cam . so when he sees it i'll have him link me and you can see what its like .. i'd love to make a trip up to nc to ride the dragon ( cool thing is my rents live a few miles from the place .. ok .. maybe like 30 mins. but you get the point .. so i might have to save up some good money and take a trip up there .. i'v seen some video and it looks like its worth it .. and its in the smokeys .. all there roads are curvy .. its fun for a while in a car . but then it gets kinda .. nervracking cuz you like damnnn how about a stright away ! )

I'm going to Deal's Gap to ride The Dragon this summer with my dad. It's going to be a blast. Another good ride that I can print a map out for you is a ride out to Leaky, TX. Nothing but high speed sweepers and some minor technical stuff. There is a point where you're riding on the crest of a mountain, and you look over one edge to see a huge f%$king drop, only to look over the other and see the same thing. I didn't get to go this year, but it sounded like a blast.

Devil's Backbone is a ways out. I think it'd be best to go into Austin, do LCR to PR4, Devil's Backbone then back to Kileen. I think. Not sure as I usually ride with my father on that road.

ok fellas this is what i have planed for the pre-ride on march the 4th .  i have some more looking to do just in case things dont take as long as i think they will or incase you guys want to ride longer .. as you can tell me and alapha normal put in some miles when i ride . 200-300 + miles aride . where already looking at 200 miles round trip or so just to the meeting point and back . then  the route there . so we'll see    . simple . nothing to hard . but its not super super easy eather :P somthing that someone with not much riding skill can do and enough for the more exp. ppl to have fun on :)  heres some links .. oh .. i forgot . from the starting point . where not gonna  go down 36 where gonna run down the dam  i'll run you by the somerville highschool and let you see a real 2A school :) .

ok well i'm having  problems uploading my pictures . but if you go to yahoo type in somerville,tx find the lake and 36 .. then follow the roads that run around the lake and thats what i plan on taking :)

*edit* ok ok here we go got some links this is the route so far . i'll look in to a longer one sometime today**edit**

how the hell did you get that ! . my orginal plan was to go to that track day in houston but .... money issues with the bigbend trip and track day where kinda tough so i had to pick one . put seeing how your not going then i guess i wont have to meet you in austin now . . the starting point was in somerville . on the first one . its the farthest part north east . i tryed to type it there ... whats a good meeting time . i was thinking 9 but stray was not to happy about having to get up so early   but 10:30-11 sounded ok for me to . means i'll have to leave at 9 to get there .. same with you guys you . need to be on 290 by no later then 9am if you want to be in somerville by 10:30-11 . put it this way . from tomball to somerville is about an hour and 20 mins doing about 80 most the way ( but at that time houston was being stupid and had it marked at like 55 ) so i was not so willing to do 80 in it when i had my truck . we had that one new guy from austin . say he wanted to go on some rides with some of us but i never hear from him . i was trying to see if maybe is buddy and him wanted to join us on eather the 4th or the 17th . but oh well .

Shush you! I wanted to feel special! How is Lonestar different? The guys from RideSmart were pretty cool with me. I need to work on my track skills though, so free is best.

lonestar has a lot smaller groups as where ridesmart just packs people in.  it is much more organized  :thumb:

every time i hear of a ridesmart even, i hear of accidents, overcrowdings, and bs going on in the pits.  ls is a lot more expensive though, and they dont offer those "special" deals  :nono:

I'm going on a ride out to Kerrville this Friday (afternoonish/evening) and staying there for the night, then riding all day Saturday. Anyone want to come along? It's going to be my father and me, as well as some other guys from the FZ1 board. So a bunch of high powered liter bikes and me on my 500. I'm sure we could split the cost of the motel.
